Considered by many the direct precursor to modern yuri, it is natural that Maria Watches Over Us is referenced by other works. Everyone seems to be particularly fond of the ribbon-tying scene in the beggining of the series.

Anime & Manga

  • Yuri is My Job!: Mai explains how Hime and Mitsuki can become "Schwestern" by exchanging matching "Kreuze" and pledging a vow of sisterhood, just like the soeur system works in Marimite. Additionally, Mitsuki re-ties Hime's ribbon as Sachiko did to Yumi in their fateful encounter. More generally, the setting of CafĂ© Liebe and the "Liebe Girls Academy" directly paralels the entire Marimite setting, but this time with Gratuitous German.
  • Lucky Star: In Episode 7, Konata outright says she's hooked on Marimite, imitates the iconic Gokigenyou and the expected treatment for your fellow classmates, in her case ''Kagami-san" and "Tsukasa-san", and even ties Tsukasa's ribbon, saying, "Your ribbon is crooked". All this accompanied by Konata posing with foreground and background roses, of course.
  • When They Cry: Miyo tying Rena's ribbon, adapted in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei with both of them dressed with the orthodox Marimite uniforms, in a scene suspiciously shot in the same angle as the original one, with a Rose-filled background on top of it all.
