- Queen's "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" was written as a tribute to Croce following his death; the title and lyrics reference Croce's "Bad Bad Leroy Brown".
- "Rock and Roll Heaven" by the Righteous Brothers imagines Croce with several other deceased musicians — including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Jim Morrison, and Bobby Darin — in Heaven together forming "a hell of a band, band, band!"
- "Weird Al" Yankovic references the chorus to "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" in "CNR" from Alpocalypse:Cause you can spit in the wind or tug on Superman's cape, but Lord knows you just don't mess around with CNR
