Go To

Summary

Anna really wants a cellphone but her mother thinks it is unnecessary for a grade-schooler. She tries to reason that everyone else in class has one, but her mom won't hear of it. Anna cries and runs to her bedroom to sulk. Her mom is too strict; she refuses to let her have a phone, she can't get new clothing either and she wouldn't let her keep a stray cat she found.

The following day at school, Anna's mood worsens as her friends tease her for lying about her mom. She makes her sound wonderful normally, but she's always complaining about her. Anna cries once she gets home and wishes that her mom was more like her friends. To get her mind off of things she prepares to watch some anime when an Ad pops up on the browser page she was viewing, one for the blog "The Kind Mama's House". She curiously follows the link to find pictures of a cute young girl with commentary from her mother, and before going off to dinner, Anna leaves a comment to express her feelings of jealousy.

In the kitchen, Anna finds a box of hand-me-downs from her cousin. She thought Anna would be happy with this since she's been asking for new clothing, but Anna is extremely displeased. The clothes aren't her style, and she wanted new clothes, not pre-worn clothing. Her mother chastises her spoiled attitude and reminds her that the clothing she wants from magazines are too expensive. Anna angrily returns to her bedroom, and to her surprise Mama has sent her an email. She introduces herself and expresses how happy she felt when she reached out to her, so she would like to be a source of venting for Anna, someone she can talk to when she needs. Anna waits a moment before responding, deciding to take her up on the offer.

Since then, Mama and Anna began to talk every day. She would help her with homework, give her advice following an argument between her and her friend, she would cheer her up too. They even exchanged pictures.

One day Anna gets a surprise delivery in the mail. She opens it up to find a cellphone, and while she is excited, she is curious because her mom wouldn't have gotten it for her. At the computer, she learns that Mama got it for her. Anna is very touched by the kind gesture, but she can't recall telling her where she lived. Just then her mom returns home and she asks Anna what came in the mail. Anna brings up that it was an alarm clock she's been wanting for some time, and while her mom is suspicious, she decides to drop the subject.

Over time Anna began to receive more presents from Mama, which she has no problem flaunting before her friends. Besides a top of the line cellphone, she also got the designer clothes she wanted. She loves Mama more than anything; words that cause her friends concern, noting that she did not address 'her mom' the way she normally would. One of them recalls a strange rumor about a woman who runs a blog and often uploads images of her child on it: but the child is not actually hers. They were kidnapped, which is why she doesn't show their faces in the pictures.

Anna can't deny how similar this is to the Mama she's gotten to know as she makes her way home from school. She feels nervous, but she tries to convince herself that its normal. Housewives like to make blogs related to their family. She runs home and her mom gently scolds her for being so wet from the rain, and she gets a towel to dry her off. She questions the clothing Anna has on, unable to recognize them. Anna claims it was in the hand-me downs and decides to investigate Mama's blog once her mom takes off to do some shopping.

Even when going through their emails she can't piece together anything to incriminate her- until she looks over the photo Mama took of herself again. She instantly recognizes the background because it resembles her bedroom. She even checks on an ornament in the picture to see that its placed in the exact same spot, and she begins to get frightened. Mama had to have been in her home at some point- but she never gave her address. It would explain how she knew her clothing size though.

Suddenly, Anna gets a call on her phone. She didn't give the number to anyone yet, and she realizes its Mama. She hesitantly answers and Mama asks that she wait for her a bit longer. Anna is perplexed until she overhears Mama conversing with someone who sounds like her mom. She rushes to town in a panic trying to locate her among the crowds of people and finds them inches apart, with Mama wielding a knife. Anna's scream forces her to retreat as everyone looks, and Anna cries as her mother embraces her. She realizes how much she loves her mother, knowing that she almost lost her.

The Shinoda's return home and Anna discards everything from Mama. She also considered telling her mom and getting the police involved, but she doesn't think they would believe her. The blog disappeared too, leading her to wonder who Mama really was. But things returned to normal, and because she decided not to tell her friends either, she claims her phone broke when asked.

One day, someone heads into Anna's home before she gets there. She calls out to her mother, excited after

Anna returns home following school and happily calls out to her mom. She's excited to learn that for dinner they will have her favorite food, curry rice. But it is short-lived after being realizing she was addressed as 'Anna-chan', her mom normally doesn't do that. Anna tries to brush it off until she is asked about the cellphone she threw away, and to her horror she turns around to find Mama, wielding a knife. She screams after Mama remarks that she was mean to her.

Tropes:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Anna got a mother who will spoil her with no complaints. But its not her mom, and she can never leave.
  • Here We Go Again!: With as many girls that she has kidnapped and Mama returning to her blog, she will probably continue to stalk little girls who reach out to her.
  • Hope Spot: Anna realizes how much she treasures her mother and Mama vanished... little did she know that she would return.
  • Invasion of the Baby Snatchers
  • Oh, Crap!: Multiple to varying degrees, but two stand-out examples are when Anna realizes Mama was in her bedroom at some point. The other is when she gets home from school and her 'mother' asks about the cellphone.
  • Skewed Priorities: Anna got a cellphone from a stranger she met online, who she never told her home address to. She never considers telling her mom any of this, because she got the phone she wanted.
