Recap / Yu Gi Oh VRAINS Ep 98 The AI Crosses The Line

Go To

Lightning uses Jin as a hostage to rattle Revolver. However, Bohman, who is very disappointed in Lightning's actions, decides to step in. Now that his hostage-taking stratagem has failed, Lightning reveals a shocking truth about Dr. Kogami to Revolver, who is already heavily wounded. And then, their fierce Duel finally reaches its conclusion...!!

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: Bohman voices his disappointment towards Lightning for using underhanded tactics to gain an unfair advantage over Revolver, and thus steps in and preserves Jin and Spectre's consciousness data so that Revolver can go all-out against his opponent without reservations.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Revolver gives off a genuine smile before he disintegrates and leaves it to Playmaker and Ai to stop Bohman.
  • Karma Houdini: Refusing to be outright terminated, Lightning takes himself and Revolver out (with the former barely hanging on with 1 LP), and ultimately avoids comeuppance for his actions when he uses the last of his strength to reach out to Bohman, who then assimilates Lightning within himself.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Bohman intervenes and absorbs Jin and Spectre's consciousness data from Lightning, preventing him from invoking a Sadistic Choice on his opponent.
    • Revolver properly addresses Ai by his name before disintegrating completely, to Ai's surprise.
  • Red Herring: It was long believed that SOL Technologies were directly responsible for installing a virus in Kogami and rendering him comatose. Lightning, however, reveals that wasn't the case, as he confesses that he was responsible for the deed himself when exposing a shocking truth to Revolver about his father.
  • Relative Button: Lightning expresses his amusement over Revolver fighting so hard to avenge his father without realising that Lightning (and not SOL Technologies as was previously believed) himself was responsible for installing a computer virus into Kogami which rendered him comatose. Revolver, however, has none of it and proceeds to counterattack his opponent without mercy.
  • The Reveal:
    • It turns out that Lightning, and not SOL Technologies, was responsible for installing a virus in Kogami which rendered him comatose.
    • Lightning is also the reason Jin Kusanagi is a complete wreck: to entertain himself during the Lost Incident, whenever the boy was down, he'd show him false images of rescue being on its way, only to turn it into nightmare fuel at the last second. He even compares shattering his psyche to accidentally breaking an amusing toy.
  • Sadistic Choice: Defied by Bohman. Disappointed in Lightning using underhanded tactics in an attempt to dissuade Revolver from landing the finishing blow, Bohman intervenes and absorbs Jin and Spectre's consciousness data from Lightning and safeguards it, so that Revolver can go all-out against his opponent without hesitation.
  • Sore Loser: Lightning refuses to accept an outright loss against Revolver, instead taking himself and his opponent out while also barely hanging on with 1 LP because he converted his Origin's remaining consciousness data to extra LP and keep himself in the game.
  • Taking You with Me: Lightning takes down Revolver with him using the co-linked "Eques Flamma's" effect, and at the same time barely hangs on with 1 LP (despite the fact that he, too, should've also been taken down completely by conventional means) thanks to Jin's consciousness data.
  • This Cannot Be!: Revolver's termination leave both Faust and Genome speechless, their expressions written with nothing but shock.
  • The Unfettered: Zigzagged. Revolver is initially unfazed by Lightning's attempts to invoke a Sadistic Choice on him after revealing that Spectre, too, will have his consciousness data completely erased should Revolver deliver the final blow to win him the Duel. However, Playmaker dissuades him from going through with the attack so as to not just create more Lost Incident victims, but also because he'll go back to the way he was during the events of the Tower of Hanoi incident. Ultimately, Revolver restrains himself and instead sets a single card to end his turn.
  • Villains Want Mercy: A weakened Lightning helplessly crawls over to Bohman and begs for mercy, to the point of offering to be assimilated within him; despite Lightning's actions up to this point, Bohman accepts. With the last of his strength, Lightning reaches out to Bohman, who then assimilates Lightning within himself.
