Recap / Yu Gi Oh GXS 1 E 7 Duel And Unusual Punishment

Go To

The school's authority figures have caught wind of Jaden and Syrus entering the abandoned dorm. They are now threatened with expulsion. However, Chancellor Sheppard decides to give them a chance for atonement, by making them participate in a tag team duel. Syrus is worried his low skill level will hinder Jaden.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: A dubbing example. Zane stops Syrus' duel with a bully and scolds him over a misplay that would've cost him the duel. In the Japanese version, Syrus bragged that if he lost, he would do a handstand around the school naked, which the dub makes no reference to. The dub also changed Zane's reason for stopping the duel. In the Japanese version, Zane took issue with Syrus's arrogant attitude, which goes against his belief in treating your opponents with respect. In the dub, more emphasis is put on Syrus's misplay, and Zane's advice is changed to the difference between using a card and playing a card.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Syrus on his first turn. He knows his Patroid with 1200 attack could defeat Jaden's 1000 attack Avian, but forgot about Jaden's face down card, which was Negate Attack, stopping Syrus' attack and ending the battle phase. Jaden points out that Syrus could've used Patroid's ability to check Jaden's face down card. There is also a flashback to Syrus' grade school years when he used Power Bond to double his Steam Gyroid's attack, only for Zane to interrupt the duel and reveal the opponent had a Spellbinding Circle trap for protection and would've lost the rest of his life points from Power Bond's cost.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: In the Japanese version, Syrus bragged that he would've done a handstand around the school naked if he lost to the bully he was dueling. As Zane revealed after stopping the duel, if he didn't stop the duel, he would've lost and would have done that as punishment.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Zane stops Syrus' duel with a bully and gives the bully a rare card as a bribe to convince him to never tell anyone about the duel and pretend it never happened, due to how Syrus was about to lose by misplaying Power Bond. For his part, the bully agrees.
