Recap / Yu Gi Oh GXS 1 E 14 A Spirit Summoned

Go To

A group of Obelisk Blue students try to communicate with a Duel Spirit, only for the spirit to steal their bodies to enter the physical plane.

  • Demonic Possession: Jinzo does this to Torrey near the end to continue the duel. After Jinzo is destroyed due to his Amplifier spell card being destroyed, he tries to revive himself with Call of the Haunted and possess Torrey. But Jaden manages to stop this with his Solemn Judgment trap.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Subverted initially. Jinzo uses an Amplifier spell card to prevent its own ability of negating trap card activation from working on its own traps. But then it is Double Subverted at the climax of the duel when Jaden destroys the Amplifier, and per its effects the monster it was equipped to, Jinzo himself, is destroyed with it.
  • Hope Spot: Inverted. Jinzo tries one last ploy to save himself by possessing Torrey and using the trap card Call of the Haunted to revive himself and keep himself in the duel. But Jaden shuts that down using Solemn Judgement (which costs half the controller's Life Points, but negates any spell or trap activation), allowing him to make the winning attack.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Torrey and his friends ended up causing the plot of the episode by trying to communicate with duel spirits, despite knowing that the school forbids it.
  • Poor Communication Kills: When Torrey and his friends made contact with Jinzo's spirit, the spirit said he needed three sacrifices before it could manifest itself. They thought he meant he needed three cards, but they found out too late it actually meant people.
  • The Power of Friendship: When Jinzo sees Winged Kuriboh's spirit during the duel and is shocked to see another spirit, Jaden says Winged Kuriboh is a friend first and a spirit second, and that's why unlike Jinzo he doesn't need to eat human souls to appear.
