Recap / Yu Gi Oh Capsule Monsters E 1 Getting Played

Go To

Yugi has a nightmare in which he and Yami Yugi are pursued by a towering fiend, which dares them to play a game of some kind. Yugi's also worried because his grandfather left on a secret expedition and hasn't returned yet. Otherwise, it's an ordinary day in Domino, and while Yugi and Tea play a game of Capsule Monsters, Joey tries his luck at a lottery to win a four-person trip to India. He pulls it off, and soon Yugi, Tea, Tristan, and Joey are on their way!

En route, however, the plane experiences turbulence and crashes in the middle of the jungle. The pilot sends a distress signal, but Joey isn't content to wait around and decides to explore. The group follows him, and Tristan discovers a man passed out in the forest. He introduces himself as Dr. Alex Brisbane, a colleague of Solomon Muto, and was the last person to see Yugi's grandfather before he disappeared. Yami Yugi is suspicious of the coincidence, but the group follows him to an ancient pyramid, said to be built by Alexander the Great.

Inside, they find a multitude of hidden traps as well as a huge room with a map on it. Brisbane explains that this is the place where Dr. Muto disappeared, and when Joey steps onto the map, he finds himself transported to a strange land. Yugi, Tea, and Tristan follow, and realize that they're in a real-life version of the Capsule Monsters board game. The group is separated by wild monsters, but soon obtains the means to fight back by touching Capsule Monster rocks. Yugi obtains the Celtic Guardian, while Tea and Tristan get Happy Lover and Thunder Kid. Joey, meanwhile, is kidnapped by a flock of Kurama. The group has their work cut out for them as they try to reunite and figure out why they're here in the first place...

This episode contains examples of:

  • Contrived Coincidence: Yami lampshades this as he wonders how the group could have won a vacation to the place Grandpa was last seen, have their plane crash, and run into the one man who knows where he is. He takes it as a sign that something isn't right.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The pyramid being built by Alexander the Great foreshadows his appearance later in the series.
    • Yugi and Tea's Capsule Monsters at school are Happy Lover and Celtic Guardian, the first monsters they obtain in the game.
  • Kneel Before Frodo: After saving Yugi from a Kamakiriman, Celtic Guardian kneels before him and pledges his Undying Loyalty and service.
  • Obviously Evil: Brisbane isn't exactly subtle about his true intentions.
  • Vacation Episode: The series starts with Yugi and friends winning a trip to India, which gets derailed when their plane crashes and they enter the Capsule Monsters world.
