Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 1 E 16 The Scars Of Defeat

Go To

While Yugi and Bakura discuss their Millennium Items, Seto Kaiba arrives on the island in a helicopter. He plans to rescue Mokuba in his own way, not Yugi's, and when Joey says he'll have to go through him first, Kaiba decides to test his new Duel Disk system on him.

The Duel Disk is a highly-realistic holographic simulator, which throws Joey off his game severely. He loses almost all of his Life Points while Kaiba is untouched. When Joey gets a good draw and summons the Red-Eyes Black Dragon, Kaiba draws his Blue-Eyes and defeats him.

Tea calls Kaiba out on using Joey as a guinea pig right when he'd been building his confidence, but Kaiba tells them that he has to be ruthless to save Mokuba, as Pegasus is also ruthless—if he wants any chance of beating him and saving Mokuba, he'll have to play by his own rules.

Besides that, Kaiba's seen firsthand that Pegasus uses a magic stronger than any card. At the intercontinental tournament in New York City, a duelist called Bandit Keith had made it to the final match against Pegasus. As Kaiba watched, Pegasus suddenly stood up and called a kid from the audience to duel Keith, giving him a list of instructions to follow. The kid won, and when Keith grabbed the note he saw that every strategy he'd planned and how to beat it was on the paper. Keith was humiliated, and Kaiba was stunned at the display of Pegasus's power. Joey, Kaiba claims, was a casualty of war, though he does wish Yugi luck in his travels. He sets off for the castle on his own.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Joey's entire "strategy" during the duel. It works as well as can be expected when up against stronger monsters. There's even an entire montage of his monsters getting destroyed by Kaiba's Rabid Horseman.
Joey: Swamp Battleguard, attack! (destroyed) Axe Raider, avenge my Battleguard! (destroyed) Go, Battle Steer! (destroyed) Uh, Garoozis? (destroyed) Smashing Rock—(destroyed) Uh, Rude Kaiser! (destroyed)
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Bandit Keith is first mentioned here, and he appears in person in the next episode.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Joey loses to Kaiba so badly he has a nightmare about it in the following episode.
    • Curb Stomp Cushion: The only one of Kaiba's monsters that Joey successfully destroys is Rabid Horseman, thanks to Red-Eyes. And then Blue-Eyes comes out...
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Kaiba's Duel Disk system allows for playing Duel Monsters anywhere without relying on large arenas. While this appears a couple more times in the Duelist Kingdom arc, the more advanced version will become a franchise staple afterward.
  • Now You Tell Me: Said by Joey when he has his Flame Swordsman attack Kaiba's Battle Ox, only for Yugi to tell him that Battle Ox is immune to fire-type monsters, which results in Flame Swordsman being destroyed.
  • Pet the Dog: In the flashback of the story Kaiba tells everyone, although Pegasus did this as a way of humiliating Bandit Keith, instead of defeating Keith himself Pegasus has a young kid named Sam who just started playing Duel Monsters take his spot in the duel and gives him instructions on exactly how to win. Keith is quickly defeated, and Pegasus declares Sam the winner, who is then cheered by the crowd.
