"A Mother, a Child, and a Blue Man's Backside" is an episode of Young Sheldon that first aired April 12, 2018.

Mary bans Sheldon from reading Watchmen, aghast at its depictions of violence and a blue man's backside. Sheldon decides it's time to stop living under Mary's thumb.

Tropes:

  • Correlation/Causation Gag: After the tornado passes and both the main Cooper household and Connie's home are mostly unscathed, Narrator!Sheldon remarks that the worst consequence they suffered was Mary believing her praying was integral to their survival.
  • Hostile Weather: Towards the episode's climax, a tornado leads to the entire family boarding up the Cooper household; it's bad enough that when Mary starts praying for their protection, Sheldon tells her to pray harder. Once it passes, any animosity between Sheldon and Mary is immediately dropped, with Sheldon hugging her for comfort.
  • Hypocrite: When Mary confiscates Sheldon's entire comic collection, Sheldon points out that the material in The Bible she makes the entire family read is far more violent.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Sheldon's comics are confiscated, Missy and Connie warn Georgie that he might be next on Mary's list, and immediately point out his not-so-smart hiding spot. When he runs off to find a better spot, they both mock how foolish boys are, with Connie stating they're "D-U-M-B dumb"...and then Missy asks what "Dum-bee" means.
  • Morton's Fork: Embarrassed by Mary shouting at the comic book shop's owner for selling a mature comic to a child and confiscating Sheldon's entire comic collection, including Casper the Friendly Ghost (as ghosts are sacrilegious), Sheldon demands to be treated like an adult. When Mary agrees to do so, Sheldon asks for his books back, and she says that he still can't have them because comic books are for children.
  • Trash of the Titans: The episode's subplot involves Georgie trying to clean up a huge mess in order to not get punished, at one point appearing to have done well but having stacked everything into a huge pile in the corner behind his bedroom door that immediately collapses after George Sr. inspects the room.
