Yo-Kai Are Real / The Spooky Intersection (original title: 妖怪がいる (There is a Monster) / 恐怖の交差点 (Intersection of Fear)) is the first episode of Yo Kai Watch.

  • Yo-Kai Are Real - While out hunting bugs with his friends, Nate, an ordinary fifth-grader, finds a Yo-Kai, Whisper, within a slot machine, who grants him the Yo-Kai Watch.

  • The Spooky Intersection - An intersection has had many supernatural events occur there. When Nate investigates, he meets a cat Yo-Kai, Jibanyan.

  • Bowdlerise: In the original Japanese, Whisper says the worst case scenario is Dismarelda doesn't leave is that Keita's parents will divorce. The English dub softens this to them fighting forever.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Keita to Nate
    • Kuma to Bear
    • Kanchi to Eddie
    • Fumi-chan to Katie
  • Establishing Character Moment: Nate catches a normal-sized bug, and takes it personally when Katie calls it average, establishing him as The Everyman and unhappy about that status.
  • Revolting Rescue: When Nate gets swarmed by bugs, Whisper shoos them away with a huge fart.

Tropes from "The Spooky Intersection"

  • Bloodless Carnage: In the flashback to how Jibanyan became a Yo-Kai, Rudy's body is only scratched up, with no blood present.
  • Bowdlerise: In the English dub, Rudy's body is cropped out of his death scene.
  • Dub Name Change: Ami-chan to Amy.
  • Hidden Eyes: Amy's eyes are hidden in black shadow when she looks down at Rudy's body.
  • Shout-Out: While trying to fight a truck, Jibanyan shouts "Eye of the tiger!".
