Recap / Xiaolin Showdown Master Monk Guan

Go To

The Dragons meet Master Monk Guan, a famous warrior. However, there may be more to Guan than meets the eye, especially when he gives Dojo to Chase Young, the master of evil!

Tropes

  • Art Shift: The flashback battle between Guan and Chase is done much more realistically than the rest of the series.
  • Characterization Marches On: Chase is actually quite amicable when meeting his evil Fan Boy Jack Spicer for the first time, even allowing him into his lair to help trigger the trap after the monks attempt to take back Dojo.
  • Compressed Vice: Dojo's overeating becomes a problem for the first and last time in the series.
  • Exact Words: "You making me a bowl of soup?" "Something like that..."
  • Fallen Hero: Guan gives a broad outline of how Chase was once a mighty hero until he drank Lao Mang Lone Soup.
  • Fattening the Victim: Chase fattens up Dojo by indulging his gluttony with lavish feasts to ensure he has a lot of dragon for the Lao Mang Lone Soup.
  • Heroic BSoD: Losing his signature weapon destroyed Guan's self-confidence, so he agreed to help Chase get Dojo.
  • I Gave My Word:
    • Once Guan delivers Dojo, Chase gives him back his weapon as previously promised.
    • After losing to Guan, Chase lets the heroes go as promised.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Both Omi and Jack Spicer get this when they meet Guan and Chase respectively.
  • Lampshade Hanging: After Guan challenges Chase to a duel, Dojo asks if this is just a standard, non-Wu duel and acknowledges how it's been a while since one of those has come up.
  • Oh, Crap!: The monks when Chase reveals his true form.
  • Once an Episode: A traditional martial arts showdown between Chase Young and Master Monk Guan in Chase's mountain lair arena, Guan putting up Dojo's freedom against eternal servitude to Chase if Guan loses. Guan wins after using his "Repel the Beast" technique to send Chase spiraling through a maze of mirrors into Dojo's soup cauldron.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: By the end of the episode, Dojo is extremely fat, but he’s back to normal in the following episode.
  • We Will Meet Again: Chase expresses certainty that he'll be seeing the monks again.
  • Wham Episode: Master Monk Guan and Chase Young make their debuts.
  • Wham Line: After Master Monk Guan explains his reasoning for trading Dojo to Chase Young in return for his spear, he then shows the monks the recipe for Lao Mang Lone Soup, the mystical potion that Chase sold his soul for, which leads a very sinister reveal.
Kimiko: (reading the recipe) One cup of wheatgrass, one tablespoon of salt, a pinch of dried frog, and one whole… dragon?!
