Recap / X-Men S2 E11 "Mojovision"

Go To

The X-Men are kidnapped by Mojo, an interdimensional media mogul that seeks to make them into his new stars.

Tropes:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After the whole incident is over, Mojo sucks up to Longshot to get him back.
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Sauron, a Pteranodon-like Savage Land Mutate.
  • Breather Episode: Other than the final scene of Xavier and Magneto at the Savage Land, this episode has no connection to the arc of the season, and serves as a breather before the two-part season finale, which brings the fight between the X-Men and Mr. Sinister and his Nasty Boys to a close. Coming right after two major Tear Jerker episodes back-to-back, it makes for a good break.
  • The Cameo:
    • Psylocke makes one in the trailer of Longshot's series, but this contradicts her previous Early-Bird Cameo which showed her on Earth, as well as her actual first appearance in Beyond Good and Evil.
    • One of Mojo's robots takes the form of The Punisher.
    • The woman kidnapped by Sauron is Shanna the She-Devil.
  • Do Not Adjust Your Set: Mojo first appears to Scott and Jean by hijacking the TV section at an electronics store.
Mojo: Uh-uh-uh-uh! Don't touch that dial!
Salesman: That's odd. [fiddles with the remote]
Mojo: Hey, I warned you! [ZAP!]
  • Early-Bird Cameo:
    • Dazzler appears as one of Longshot's companions/assistants. This is not addressed in any way in Dazzler's actual first appearance in the first part of the Dark Phoenix Saga (where she has darker hair than here and may be a Decomposite Character).
    • Three of Mojo's robots take the form of Gladiator, Flashfire and Earthquake of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. They will make their first actual appearance in the Phoenix Saga.
    • A Skrull appears among the audience in Mojo's arena. The Skrull Empire will have a minor role in the last episode of the Dark Phoenix Saga.
    • The Punisher’s cameo could be considered this given the X-Men eventually had a two-parter crossover with Spider-Man: The Animated Series and The Punisher himself is a recurring character on Spider-Man.
  • Insult Backfire:
Longshot: You've abused every decent actor in the galaxy. You're a soulless, sadistic bag of pus. And you smell!
Mojo: Ooooh, flattery, young man, will get you absolutely nowhere.
  • Lampshade Hanging: After the X-Men are returned to the mall, an annoyed Scott asks if anyone can explain what just happened.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Spiral, The Dragon for Mojo.
  • Nominal Hero: Longshot's a decent guy overall, but his motivation for freeing the X-Men is to get them out of his timeslot.
  • Noodle Incident: Longshot says he once dated an actress with two heads.
    Spiral: Was she nice?
    Longshot: Yes and no.
  • Number Two: While Spiral is Mojo's most powerful servant, Major Domo serves as his closest advisor.
  • Oh, Crap!: Spiral's flummoxed reaction to Jean using her powers to disrupt the show's equipment and knock out the signal.
  • Power Incontinence: Scott and Jean are at the mall to buy a new television, hoping it has a built-in surge protector after a little accident happened to the last one. When the salesman asks for details, Scott just remarks he'd have to know Jubilee to understand.
  • Servile Snarker: Major Domo has a few moments.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The title of Mojo's show with Storm and Cyclops (Miami Mutants) is one to Miami Vice.
    • The theme and the font of Mojo's show with Rogue and Beast (Rogue Star) is one to Star Trek.
    • Finally, Mojo's show with Wolverine and Jean (I Dream of Jean) is one to I Dream of Jeannie.
  • Tempting Fate: During the climax, Mojo rants, as Wolverine cuts the cord suspending the monitors above the stage.
Mojo: This, if you haven't been paying attention, is my dimension. Get with the program or get crushed!
  • Title Drop: "Nobody tunes out Mojovision!"
  • Tuckerization: The salesman's ID tag reads "Calamari" (after Joseph Calamari, one of the show's executive producers).
