Season 1, Episode 2 of X-Men: Evolution.
Kitty Pryde discovers her mutant abilities of phasing through solid matter. Xavier sends Jean Grey on a mission to recruit her as one of the X-Men, only to find out that she has already been won over by Lance Alvers, otherwise known as the mutant Avalanche with the ability to cause earthquakes and tremors.
Tropes included:
- Big Damn Heroes: When Sabretooth has Wolverine pinned with a car, Cyclops blasts him.
- Cool Car: Cyclops' red sports car. He and Nightcrawler use it to follow Wolverine around.
- Crash-Into Hello: How Avalanche and Shadowcat first meet.
- Deadpan Snarker:
- After being turned away by Kitty's parents, Jean remarks they should've just called to get rejected and save themselves the flight time.
- On the phone, Xavier gives Jean some advice about overcoming obstacles. After he hangs up, he quips about being in a wheelchair overlooking many steps.
- Foreshadowing: Jean mentions that Kitty wasn't the only mutant that Cerebro picked up. Xavier says they'll deal with Lance later.
- It's All My Fault: Kitty's father tried to pretend nothing was happening. He realizes this led to Kitty feeling scared and susceptible to Lance, so he apologizes and appeals to her.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Lance insists he can relate to Kitty because of his own powers and that he knows how hard it can be to control and interact with family. Jean does similarly and says, like Kitty, she hated her powers when they first developed.
- Pet the Dog: Lance uses his powers to mess with one of the girls that's been bullying Kitty.
- Power Incontinence: Kitty's power keeps kicking in randomly.
- Stuffed into a Locker: Kitty is subjected to this by a couple bullies. She manages to escape because of her powers, but Lance sees her.
- That Was Not a Dream: The episode opens with Kitty asleep and her powers causing her to fall into the basement. She wakes up in a panic saying she had a nightmare about falling. Her mother assures her it was just a dream, but then her father looks up and sees Kitty's blanket phased into the basement's ceiling.
- Ungrateful Bastard: Wolverine cops an attitude about Cyclops and Nightcrawler helping him against Sabretooth, though Nightcrawler is certain he secretly loves them.
- Welcome Episode: For Kitty Pryde, the new recruit.
