Episode 92: Gammadion

Takes place March 4-15.

Overgirl, a Kryptonian hybrid from a parallel universe where Nazi Germany won World War 2, appears in orbit around Earth 16, having fallen through one of a number of portals that opened mysteriously. Although she is aware of the existence of parallel universes, and that Germany lost the war in most of them, she is taken aback to find that a world without racial segregation can be peaceful and prosperous. She also realises that Overman, her father figure, is more sympathetic to non-Nazi ideologies than she had previously believed. However, she is not yet prepared to entirely abandon her upbringing.

While waiting for someone to find a way to return her to Earth 10, Overgirl joins the Team, with Kaldur's approval but to the dismay of several members.

The title refers to a swastika symbol.

  • Alternate-History Nazi Victory: Since Kal-El landed in Germany on Earth 10, several decades earlier than Earth 16, they were able to reverse engineer his pod's technologies and dominate the Earth. The Fuhrer still rules, aided by the Reichstag. Germania covers much of Europe, from which non-Aryans have been driven out or exterminated, and the surviving races are segregated.
  • Alternate Universe:
    • Overgirl comes from Earth 10, where the Nazis won World War II.
      • Overman, the Superman of Earth 10, has apparently seen and visited other worlds- enough for him to tell Overgirl that theirs is the only world where National Socialism succeeded, and advises her to get that fact out of the way as soon as possible to smooth relations should she find herself in another world.
    • Peter Wynne of Earth 12 gets another segment. A portal appears in the sky and attempts to "acquire" him like the other alternate Pauls, but it mistakenly seizes Clayface, who had taken Peter's form.
  • Long-Distance Relationship: Downplayed. Paul drops in to see Jade on the other side of the galaxy, since he can teleport to her side at any time.
  • Might Makes Right: Lincoln Burns tries to claim Apokoliptian citizenship as a tax dodge, but Apokolips doesn't have citizenship in the usual sense, with a balance of rights and responsibilities; it has an autocrat. The Renegade deals with his citizenship claim "under Apokoliptian law", by having a minion beat Mr Burns into silence, while the Renegade himself personally beats up the Apokoliptian who advised him to make the claim.
Renegade: You drew my attention, Sleez. And I am going to remind you why you shouldn't have done that.
  • No Biochemical Barriers: Averted. One reason that the Super family clears out Karsta Wor-Ul's Kryptonian farm is that the crops would be poisonous to humans. They still invite Paul to stay for dinner, though, since his rings can overcome all of that.
  • Obliviously Evil: Overgirl has been raised to believe Nazi propaganda all her life, so it's not surprising that she thinks it's noble to ostracize minorities and sterilise anyone with a genetic disorder.
  • Out of the Frying Pan: Since the Renegade has been appointed suzerain of Earth by Darkseid, a musician tries to dodge paying taxes by claiming Apokoliptian citizenship. So, the Renegade deals with him under Apokoliptian rules, ie the strong do whatever they please to the weak. And since he finds the whole situation to be an irritating distraction, that means he's going to let out some frustration.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Almost literally. When Paul contacts Doctor Sivana and asks to teleport himself and Overgirl to his lab, Doctor Sivana assumes that she is a specimen and attempts to dissect her.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Overgirl had convinced herself that "Auntie Gerri" was just joking about being lesbian, and that she couldn't take time away from military service for a family. Despite 50 years of peace. And upon learning that Earth 16's version of Gerri is indeed lesbian and married to a woman, Overgirl decides that she's just going to go home and pretend she never learned it.
  • Technology Uplift: Earth 10's Germany reverse-engineered a lot of Kryptonian technology from Superman's pod, allowing them to dominate the world. Paul is annoyed that Hitler has shared more of it with the world than Earth 16 Superman has.
  • Too Dumb to Live: It's possibly understandable that Lincoln Burns didn't realise what a monumentally bad idea it is to try to claim Apokoliptian citizenship. But his Apokoliptian lawyer, Sleez, definitely should have anticipated the beating they would both get.
  • Word of God: The portals opening on Earth 10 are being caused (unintentionally) by the actions of Time Trapper Paul and Red Queen Jade.
Mr Zoat: This wasn't exactly what they meant to happen, but yes, this is a result of their actions.
