Episode 77: Clarion Call

Takes place 24-25 December 2011.

Short version

The Silver City declares Paul's life forfeit, and sends an army of angels, which pursue him into Hell and kill him there, sending his soul to the Silver City for judgement.

Longer version

Paul and Jade are spending Christmas on Themyscira, when they are visited by Eris. She expresses concern about her relationship with Paul, since his tattoos prevent her from watching all of the disruption he causes, and tells him that she gave Zauriel his location, then advises him not to get killed. The Earth is then enclosed in a net of golden fire, and a voice from the heavens decrees the death of Paul and his associates.

Zauriel arrives, injured and on fire. Paul heals him, and he tells Paul that the Kings of Heaven were cautiously interested in what he achieved with the Pomegranate of Good and Evil, until the Mind of God appeared, condemned Paul and cast Zauriel out.

Determined to survive, Paul retrieves the Hellblazer rifle from his Ice Fortress, but is attacked by a group of angels and nearly killed before Scott Free rescues him and takes him to Hell. There, Paul gathers the demon lords, who are offended by the angels' encroachment in their domain, and set up defences. When Heaven's armies come for Paul, the demons surprise them and take a heavy toll. However, the Archangel of War arrives in person, and is able to bypass their defences and kill Paul. He wakes up to hear a voice praising the Lord of Hosts.

The title likely refers to the angels' worldwide proclamation condemning Paul.

  • Distracted by the Sexy: Donna lands in front of Thomas Beresford after getting punched through the air during a spar with his sister. So, essentially a younger clone of Wonder Woman, in an exercise outfit, sweaty, and catching her breath. Paul decides not to bother him about it too much; Thomas' dating prospects are actually quite limited due to his Super-Strength.
  • Enemy Mine: Paul doesn't really like Hell, but when Heaven declares war on him, it's the only place he figures can protect him. Plus, he did already make an ally there.
  • Fate Worse than Death: The demons have made an anti-creation weapon from the tortured screams of the angel Gabriel.
  • Parental Marriage Veto: Reversed. Grayven warns a neighbor off from dating his mother. It's not that he had anything against the potential suitor - quite the contrary, he'd like his mother to have more positive social interactions - it's just that Darkseid might decide to be possessive of her, and take offense.
  • Villain Respect: After Harm eats an angel's flesh, Rosacarnis points out that that's an action that "No one here would dream of doing, and they all admire him for it."
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Dr Sivana (senior) recognises that something is lacking in his social skills. So, he hits upon an excellent plan: he kidnaps the only alternate universe version of himself who isn't a supervillain, to advise him!
