Recap / Winx Club S 1 E 8 A Friendship Sundered

Go To

It's the Day of the Rose (aka Mother's Day) holiday, so Tecna and Flora go home to celebrate with their families while Bloom, Stella, and Musa remain in Alfea. Musa reveals her mother passed away when she was very young, while Stella is reluctant to return to Solaria because of her parents' difficult divorce. Bloom stays to see the celebrations and, presumably, because it's not Mother's Day on Earth.

The girls then get invited by the Specialists to the Day of the Rose festival in Magix, where there will be a ball and a riding competition. Musa opts to spend the day grieving. Riven decides to flirt with Bloom, much to her chagrin.

Meanwhile, Griffin gives the Trix one more chance to destroy the blossoming alliance between the Alfea fairies and the Red Fountain Specialists, so they prepare a nasty surprise. Darcy, disguised as Timmy, gives Bloom a sabotaged riding helmet under the pretense it'd help her mend things with Riven. The witch then infiltrates the contest and, when Riven inevitably gets hurt, swoops in to save him.

This is the start of their shady romance and of Riven's betrayal arc.

Tropes:

  • Face–Heel Turn: The events of the episode are all orchestrated by Darcy. As Riven is unaware of it, he decides to switch sides in the hopes of getting appreciated as a team member. So, in "Betrayed!", he goes on a date with Darcy and allies with the Trix, who are the Winx's (and by extension, his Specialist squad's) enemies.
  • Frankenslation: This is one of the episodes merged into a blob for the Nick specials. Clips from it appear in both 'The Fate of Bloom' and 'Revenge of the Trix'.
  • Town Contest Episode: Riders from all across Magix city are competing in a race à propos the Day of the Rose. Amongst the contestants, we have three of the Specialists and Darcy.
