Go To

Peter collaborates with his ex, Jill, who has arrived from Chicago to enlist his help in a case. Meanwhile, Neal continues his investigation into the significance of Masconi’s 13th chapter.

Tropes:

  • Beneath the Mask: Having lost a partner herself, Jill notices that Peter puts up a strong front, but actually struggles with Siegel’s death.
  • Bound and Gagged: The criminals bind Peter and Jill to chairs with cable holders, suspecting that they are either buyers or feds.
  • Briefcase Full of Money: The villains see that Peter and Jill's bag is full of money, and draw the conclusion that they're either buyers or feds.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Jill apologizes for interrupting Peter and Elizabeth's anniversary dinner, and Elizabeth jokes that this is actually just a normal Tuesday night for them.
  • Classified Information: Elizabeth wants to know what Peter and Jill are working on, but Jill tells her it's classified, which doesn't calm Elizabeth's suspicions about them.
  • The Confidant: Jill becomes a confidant for Peter, given her experience of losing her partner. He can talk to her about losing Agent Siegel, as he doesn't want to worry his wife by discussing the dangerous job of an FBI agent with her. In the end, with Jill’s encouragement, he finally opens up to Elizabeth about everything.
  • Delivery Stork: Neal jokes that he believed Satchmo was delivered by a stork when Peter mentions bringing him home from the breeder among the anniversaries he wants to remember.
  • Drinking on Duty: Rebecca questions Neal if he's allowed to drink on the job as an FBI agent when he has a glass of wine. Neal explains that FBI agents are technically always on the job, making this rule complicated.
  • Dying Clue: In Siegel’s ID badge, there is a business card of a real estate company with “Cooper 3?” written on the back of it, smeared with Siegel’s blood.
  • Impersonating an Officer: Someone has been using Siegel's ID badge to impersonate an FBI agent. When caught, the man claims that he found it along with the gun in a dumpster.
  • It's All My Fault: Peter blames himself for Siegel's death because Peter brought him in to New York to replace him as Neal's handler.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Elizabeth trusts Peter but worries about Jill making advances on him. She gets concerned when she finds a selfie of them on Peter's desk, unaware that it was taken for an investigation.
  • The Missus and the Ex: Jill meets Peter and Elizabeth while they have dinner at the restaurant where they had their first date. They work together on a case and Elizabeth becomes concerned about Jill making advances on Peter.
  • Sherlock Scan: By watching Peter and Jill interact in Peter's office, Neal and Jones figure out that she is his ex.
  • Shout-Out: When Jones and Neal are driving in Peter’s luxurious car:
Jones: Cruisin' for the bad guy in a sweet ride, just like Crockett and Tubbs. Ah. I am living the dream.
Neal: Did you base your entire future on Miami Vice?
Jones: Ah, Hill Street Blues, Cagney & Lacey — any show about law enforcement.
  • Talking with Signs: Back when they were first dating, Elizabeth told Peter with a sign that she likes Italian food.
  • Treasure Map: Mosconi’s 13th chapter effectively functions as a treasure map. When put together, the pages make out a drawing of a stained glass window, which Neal then traces to its location in the heart of Manhattan.
  • Undercover as Lovers: Peter and Jill pretend to be honeymooners to get into the building where the villains’ hotel room is.
  • Verbal Backspace: Neal, when he and Elizabeth are checking out the hotel where Peter and Jill took a selfie:
Neal: They’re probably not even here... [after seeing them] Okay, they’re here.
  • We Need a Distraction: Elizabeth stalls while pretending to give the chip to the criminals, allowing Neal to sneak in from behind and free Peter by cutting his cable holders.
  • Working with the Ex: Peter's ex Jill, an SSG agent, comes to New York to seek his help with a case involving a tech expert and a next-generation microchip.
  • Wrong Assumption: Elizabeth mistakenly worries that Peter and Jill might rekindle their romance when they are really just working together.
  • You Didn't See That: Neal has a device that can open doors, created by Mozzie, and asks Elizabeth to pretend she didn't see it.
