Recap / Whats New Scooby Doo S 3 E 14 E Scream

Go To

Velma, uninterested despite the others' glee over attending a convention, just hopes for some quiet to read...but she gets more than she bargained for when the new generation of Osomon toys come to life and begin attacking.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • The Bus Came Back: Professor Ostwald returns after being absent since "High-Tech House of Horrors".
  • Foreshadowing: As Velma seemingly leaves the VR machine, you can notice that none of her friends are wearing the costumes they had on when they came to the convention. This is a sign she hasn’t really left the machine.
  • The Game Never Stopped: Velma gets a false mystery inside a VR machine during E3. She spots some errors dealing with other members of Mystery Inc. revealing she was in a VR machine.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: Daphne loses one of her shoes while the gang is getting to the Mystery Machine to escape. She pulls another one out of her purse, which doesn't match the first.
  • Mistaken for Undead: Velma runs into "zombie kids" during the mystery, and when she sees them again, she screams and runs away. Daphne points out that they're just spaced out from too many video games.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Her friends' bizarre behavior is what tips Velma off to the fact that she's in a virtual reality game: Freddy doesn't want to split up; Daphne is okay with wearing mismatched shoes, and Shaggy and Scooby are perfectly willing to be bait for a trap even without being offered Scooby Snacks. Shaggy saying "Toinks!" instead of "Zoinks!" is just the final nail in the coffin.
  • Revealing Continuity Lapse: Most members of Mystery Inc. start behaving heavily out-of-character: Fred doesn't tell the gang to split up but instead they all go together, Daphne goes around wearing mismatched shoes without worrying about her look, and Shaggy and Scooby offer themselves as bait for the monsters with no need of bribing them with Scooby Snacks. All these changes (plus the fact that Shaggy says "Toinks" instead of "Zoinks") end up making Velma realize she is actually in a VR simulation.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The episode's title is based on E3.
    • "The Osomons" is a play on real world game Pokémon, though the designs seem to be expies of Furby mixed with the Tasmanian Devil.
    • "The Gooey-ohs" is a play on real world game Yu-Gi-Oh!.
    • While doing a video shooting game, Daphne does the signature action poses of Neo and Trinity in The Matrix.
    • The costume that Daphne was wearing is similar to Catwoman.
  • Unexpectedly Realistic Gameplay: Played for Laughs. Fred is having fun with a driving game that ends when the car he's driving runs out of gas.
Fred: Out of gas? Wow, this is realistic!
