Recap / Whats New Scooby Doo S 1 E 3 Space Ape At The Cape

Go To

While visiting NASA, a mysterious alien egg hatches. The gang must stop the alien before NASA's shuttle mission is aborted.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Hero: When the alien is chasing Daphne across a gangplank, Shaggy warns Daphne not to look down. This saves her from being chased by the Alien as when the latter does that it gives up on following Daphne, due to Janet's fear of heights.
  • Broken Pedestal: Janet Lawrence was Velma's favorite scientist in this episode up until the former came up with the alien scheme to keep the shuttle from launching to avoid the humiliation of failing to finish her project. It's after Janet was caught, Velma lost all respect for her.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • When Fred asks Janet about being an astronaut, she reveals that she would never be able to be one as she is afraid of heights. This is why she didn't follow Daphne as the alien across the gangplank when she was chasing her.
    • The dehydrated organic food. Upon seeing it expand, Velma realized the so called alien egg was made of the same material, and Janet simply added water to it to make it look like it was hatching.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Reggie the chimpanzee, whom Janet trained to do anything, as he was the short version of the alien before wearing the costume herself.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When the Alien is chasing Daphne across a gangplank, it stops following her when looking down. This is because the Alien is Janet, who mentioned to the gang that she is afraid of heights.
    • Janet doesn't want anyone to see her research data. That's because her project wasn't ready, and it's the reason she created the alien.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Shaggy and Scooby are looking for the alien, Shaggy believes that the alien might be hiding in the air-vent based a movie he and Scooby saw where an alien did that, only for the alien to appear right behind them.
  • Mythology Gag: In this episode, there are four scientists that resemble characters from the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! series. One scientist resembles the Professor from ''Scooby-Doo and a Mummy, Too'', two scientists resemble Dr. Jekyll and Helga from ''Nowhere to Hyde'', and one of the scientists resembles Professor Ingstrom from ''Scoobys Night With A Frozen Fright''.
  • Red Herring: The woman who keeps watching the heroes. Is she the culprit? No, she isn’t- she’s actually an FBI Agent who was sent to investigate. After all, the FBI would take the presence of extraterrestrial life very seriously.
  • Toon Physics: Shaggy is able to swallow a dehydrated watermelon that expands in his mouth without choking.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Based on a triple movie feature he and Scooby saw, Shaggy believes that the Alien might be hiding in the air vents and looks inside there. The Alien proves him wrong by appearing right behind him and Scooby.
