Recap / What If Dr Strange Were A Disciple Of Dormammu

Go To

Everyone knows the story of Dr. Strange; he was a renowned but super arrogant neurosurgeon who lost his ability to use his hands in a car accident, and sought out the Ancient One for a magical way to get his manual dexterity back. The Ancient One refused to give it to him, instead using the opportunity to teach Stephen that there were way bigger things out there than his career. Thus, Stephen Strange became the Sorcerer Supreme, one of the most powerful magical heroes on Earth. But, what if he never learned that lesson?

In this alternate universe, Mordo heals his hands properly, and he goes right back to being a surgeon and an asshole. When he is eventually loses his medical license for malpractice, he's the perfect target for Mordo to tempt into Dormammu's service. Of course, it fairly quickly backfires when Dr. Strange kills him to become Dormammu's sole disciple, but hey, can't win 'em all.

Dr. Strange goes about being a supervillain, while the Ancient One brings together an alliance of Masters of the Mystic Arts, and gives them the Eye of Agamotto, which aside from being a snazzy piece of jewelry functions as a portal to Eternity, the Anthropomorphic Personification of the cosmos. They summon the Vishanti, who won't directly intervene but do tell the Ancient One how to solve the situation.

This involves giving the Eye of Agamotto to Supervillain Strange, who uses it to attack the Ancient One... but it doesn't work, instead forcing him to see the good intentions of his opponent. A very freaked out Strange flees to Eternity's realm through the Eye's portal, where he gets caught in the middle of a fight between Dormammu and Eternity. He chooses to help Eternity, and then returns to Earth, now properly humbled and willing to become the Ancient One's student like normal.

What If... Dr. Strange Were a Disciple of Darth Wiki?

  • Heel Realization: The Eye of Agamotto forces one on Dr. Strange by showing him how honestly good the Ancient One was.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Dr. Strange loses his ability to practice medicine and becomes the Ancient One's student (and presumably, the Sorcerer Supreme) like normal, it just takes him longer to get there.
  • Kingmaker Scenario: In the climax, Dr. Strange gets in the middle of a Beam-O-War between Dormammu and Eternity. He can't do anything to the cosmic beings, but he can tip the scales to choose which one will prevail over the other.
