Recap / We Bare Bears S 4 E 19 Escandalosos

Go To

The Baby Bears enter a Mexican wrestling tournament to help out a new friend.

Tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Rodolfo shows off his champion belts, the last of which is for most improved in a tamale cookoff.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Rodolfo grew up to become a famous luchador and loving family man, but after the fight with Gordito, he never saw the bears again. He comforts himself by (correctly) guessing that the bears are surely fine since they have each other.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Panda calls Gordito out for his dirty fighting, calling him a "dingle". This only leads to Gordito trying to pummel Panda too, which ironically leads to Gordito's downfall.
  • Chekhov's Gun: In the beginning, Rodolfo slips on Panda's corncob. Later, this is how Panda defeats Gordito.
  • The Giant: Gordito, the final opponent for the bears. His schtick is to give his opponents three chances to knock him down; once they inevitably fail, he gives them a beatdown. He was undefeated until his match with the bears.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: When asked for a name for the bear's team, Grizz sees a telenovela magazine with the headline "Que Escandalosos!" ("How scandalous!") and calls themselves Escandalosos.
  • Masked Luchador: The Baby Bears enter a junior Lucha Libre tournament as Los Escandalosos. Panda makes masks for Grizz and Ice Bear out of old gym socks. Their friend Rodolfo eventually grows up to become one.
  • Mythology Gag: "Escandalosos" is the name of the show's Spanish dub.
  • Pro Wrestling Episode: The episode revolves around the Baby Bears acting as Mexican luchadores.
  • Shout-Out:
    • One of the luchador posters at the gym is for one called Rylo Ken.
    • Rodolfo's name is a reference to Rodolfo Guzman Huerta, aka El Santo, the most famous Mexican luchador ever.
    • One of the trophies Rodolfo has is because he beat "El Diablo Verde", which is a reference to Blue Demon, he is a well known luchador that even starred in his own movies, either solo or along with El Santo, like in Santo y Blue Demon contra DrĂ¡cula y el Hombre Lobo.
  • Translation Nod: The eponymous wrestling team's name is not only a pun on the Spanish words "escandalosos" (scandalous) and "osos" (bears) but also the title of the show in Latin America.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The episode opens with Rodolfo in the modern day, showing off his trophy collection to his son, and the last trophy inspires him to tell the story of how he met the Baby Bears.
