Recap / VeggieTales in the House, S1, E6

Go To

Pa Grape's Son: It is Father and Son Day in the house for the veggies, but Jean-Claude is saddened because his 'papa' isn't around to celebrate it with him. Fortunately for him, Pa Grape offers himself as an honorary 'Father for the Day' to Jean-Claude, so they get to take part in the Father-Son Day Celebration games. In the end, even though they don't win, Pa reminds Jean-Claude that everyone is a part of God's family.

Larry's Cardboard Thumb: Larry offers to take care of Petunia's plants for her while she gets helps set up for the Best Gardener Contest. Unfortunately, Larry's attempts at having a green thumb results in Petunia's flowers getting destroyed, along with her prized daisy, so Larry substitutes it with a cardboard replica, which ends up getting ruined when Petunia waters it. Fortunately for Larry and Petunia, Bob reveals to have replaced Petunia's daisy with his own, thereby saving it.

Tropes found in Pa Grape's Son:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Larry has this to say at the end of the games;
"Well, after close examination, the results are in! I'm here to announce that... I have no idea who won. I wasn't paying attention."
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: Larry gives one of these to Archibald, when Archibald gets a bit too excited while announcing about the Father-Son Day Celebration.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Pa does this near the end of the episode when he says, "I wonder how Laura's doing at the store?"
  • Cool Old Guy: Pa Grape becomes this, once he and Jean-Claude take part in the Father-Son Day Celebration games.
  • Giant Food: Laura gives Ichabeezer and Mr. Lunt two giant french fries, which she calls "the big fries".
  • Mucking in the Mud: Mike and Junior fall victim to this, after Pa and Jean-Claude pull them right into the mud during the Tug-of-War.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Junior appears to show shades of this in the episode, constantly asking Bob and Larry how they'll know when they're out in the games, and at one point, while Bob is explaining how the tug-of-war goes, Junior makes faces at Jean-Claude, who makes faces back at him.
  • Parental Substitute: Pa Grape becomes this to Jean-Claude, albeit for the day, though.
  • Quicksand Sucks: Happens to Larry, when he demonstrates the 'falling-in-the-mud' part of the Tug-of-War.

Tropes found in Larry's Cardboard Thumb:

  • Department of Redundancy Department:
Larry: Watching plants grow is like... watching plants grow!
  • Epic Fail: Larry's attempts to take care of Petunia's plants ends up a failure, when he first accidentally scorches them with sunlight through a magnifying glass, ends up fighting against a giant venus fly trap, and attempts to grow more plants with fast-growing seeds, only to discover that these seeds actually sprout weeds.
  • First-Name Ultimatum: Happens at the end of the episode, when Petunia discovers her damaged plants, which causes her to yell out, "LARRY!!!!!"
  • Shout-Out: After Larry's attempt at handling the hose while trying to water Bob's daisy results in him getting blasted backwards, Larry then says, "Just a minor setback."
  • Slow "NO!": Larry does this after accidentally tripping while carrying Petunia's daisy, which causes the daisy to get thrown into the air.
  • Solar-Powered Magnifying Glass: Larry inadvertently ends up destroying Petunia's plants this way, after attempting to give them sunlight.
  • Stolen MacGuffin Reveal: A variation, in which Petunia's daisy that ends up getting destroyed by the magnified sunlight, was actually Bob's own daisy, which he replaced, knowing that Larry was having trouble with taking care of Petunia's plants.
  • Water Hose Rodeo: Happens twice to Larry, when trying to give Petunia's plants water, which results in him getting thrown all around the greenhouse.
  • Wild Take: Happens to Larry when seeing a plant that is scary.
