Recap / Ultraman Z Ep 17: Beliarok

Go To

The Space Pirate, Alien Barossa, has returned! Alien Barossa is determined to steal Ultraman Z's new weapon, Beliarok.

Our hero cannot allow Beliarok's hidden power to fall into the hands of an evil alien. With Juggler also in the mix, the battle for the mystic sword begins!

Episode Tropes:

  • Above Good and Evil: Juggler does not give a rat's ass about using Beliarok for good or evil, but to sate his urge to fight in an endless journey.
  • Avenging the Villain: In addition to hunting Beliarok on Earth, the Barossa II is also content on killing Z to avenge his older brother.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Like his brother before him, Barossa II has no problem taking underhanded methods when he's in the receiving end of defeat, like holding Yoko hostage after Z gains the upper hand in Delta Rise Claw.
  • Continuity Nod: Alien Barossa II enlarges himself with the seeds of Juran, the giant flower from Ultra Q.
  • Demonic Possession: Celebro switches from Kaburagi to a GAFJ officer after Kaburagi's body was too injured to be used.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: From what was provided by his dialogue, Barossa II holds no ill intent on his brother and admires him. Part of his reason to kill Z is to avenge his older brother too.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite Celebro's open atrocities in the past few episodes, he did so under Kaburagi's image. This proves in handy as he is able to use someone else as a new host while leaving Kaburagi to be The Scapegoat.
  • Manipulative Bastard: While Celebro does use Kaburagi as a human cover on Earth, his quirky habits and open involvements in behind the monster attacks on Earth puts him in a wanted list by the GAFJ, even if he's a part of the team. Its also a subversion of this trope too, since Celebro is an alien parasite, he can switch bodies to avoid suspicion and left his old host to take up the blame.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: Given that the Beliarok will act under its chosen wielder's whims, anyone who comes contact with the weapon will prompt Beliarok to ask what will the user do when taken hold upon the blade. What makes this also a bad thing that the Beliarok could fall into the wrong hands; as this is also the premise of the episode where the hero (Haruki), a space pirate (Alien Barossa), and a wild card who has nothing to do with the light or dark (Juggler) have to tussle it out to prove themselves worthy. Even when Juggler got Beliarok fair and square, Beliarok is seem interested with Haruki's determination.
  • The Scapegoat: Kaburagi took the blame for all of Celebro's atrocities after the alien parasite left his body.
  • Shout-Out: Hoo boy, where do we start, this episode is littered with references to pop culture.
    • The Alien Barossa II quoted characters from other Toku series, such as Daigo Kiryu's "Kiite otodoroke", Captain Marvelous' "Hadeni Ikuze" and Momotaros' "Ikuze, ikuze, ikuze!".
    • With the Beliarok, Barossa II performs Final Break, the movement being a carbon copy of the Gokaigers' Gokai Saber finisher Gokai Slash.
    • Yoko as Windom performs to Gundam shout outs: when directing all of Windom's energy to the right hand, her screen goes pink and Windom's body frame appears, a la Trans-Am. After that, she performs Domon Kasshu's Bakunetsu God Finger (Erupting Burning Finger) attack to Barossa II. Which is funny in a way, since Barossa II was voiced by the very same man who voiced Domon Kasshu.
    • When assuming Delta Rise Claw, Z's eyes glow red and goes in a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, evading Barossa's attacks while delivering his counters in mad fury is a way that would make Mikazuki and Barbatos proud.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: The second Alien Barossa managed to showcase all feats of raw power even going as to keep up with a trained martial artist like Haruki but falls short to Juggler's swordsmanship mastery which is peerless enough to put Barossa in his place. What Barossa lacks in finesse from both Haruki and Juggler, is being able to adapt to underhanded tactics like taking their allies hostage, which makes them hesitate to attack him and regain control of the fight.
  • Victor Gains Loser's Powers: Subverted. Even though Juggler managed to make short work of Alien Barossa in a fair fight and took Beliarok as his own, the weapon decided to choose Haruki and Z for their indomitable will. He doesn't seem to care when Beliarok returned back to its rightful owner.
  • You Kill It, You Bought It: Like his older brother, Barossa II robs weapons and add them to his possession. His weapons are King Joe Launcher, Galactron MK2's axe, Juran seeds to grow his body proportions, Gilvalis' arm claw taken from Metsuboros' remains and last but not least, the Beliarok in two brief occasions.
