  • Date First Aired: 22/09/1992

Jenny isn't feeling right and doesn't seem to have any desire for food. She's not the only person who's feeling under the weather, as Bill is taking a pregnancy test. Whilst waiting for the second result, she has to deal with moving lobsters at work. Soon, whilst with Ben on their way to David's parent-teacher meeting, they come up against another car. He refuses to pass and they end up in a car race. The other car flees, but Ben doesn't consider it over yet.

At the meeting, David's teacher expresses concern that he's getting too obsessed with the macabre. Meanwhile, Rona finds the truth from Jenny about her issue - she has been making herself sick after meals to match up with the other girls in her class. Bill is sympathetic and agrees to take her to the doctor.

However, although Bill's pregnancy is just a false alarm, the second stick is missing, and Jenny definitely didn't use it. Meanwhile, Ben has gotten into a fight with the rival car, which eventually evolves into a wheelchair race. He loses, especially when one considers the fact that his rival was already in a wheelchair. Afterwards, Ben tells Bill that she's going to have to care for him for now on, as he did a test and found that he's pregnant. On the bright side, Jenny is over her weight woes now.

Tropes in this Episode:

  • Appearance Angst: Jenny has been angsting over her weight and it has gotten to the point where she's beginning to show signs of anorexia.
Jenny: I've... been making myself sick after meals.
Bill: Oh. I've been cooking those meals.
    Jenny: I know.
Bill: Well, what's made you do that?
Jenny: I don't know. It's just... everyone else is prettier and brighter and thinner than me.
  • Comedic Work, Serious Scene: Whilst the show is, for the most part, a Dom Com focusing on the strange life of a family, the scene where Jenny admits to having Appearance Angst and puking up her meals is played dead seriously, with the only sign of a joke being Bill's annoyance that it was the meals she made that were being puked up.
  • Compressed Vice: Jenny's issues with anorexia occur only in this episode.
  • Continuity Nod: Sven reappears, having obtained at least some understanding of English since his last reappearance.
  • Death Glare: Mrs. Grimes has not yet gotten over the death of her dog to the Porters, and gives Jenny a glare from her window.
  • First-Name Basis: The teacher at David's parent-teacher meeting wants Ben and Bill to dispense with the "surname crap" and just call her Babs. Indeed, she herself prefers it when parents use first names.
  • Mistaken for Pregnant:
    • Bill thought she was pregnant at first, but it turns out to be a false alarm.
    • Ben ends up believing that he's pregnant at the end of the episode when he picks up Bill's pregnancy stick.
  • Mister Seahorse: Ben finds Bill's pregnancy tester and genuinely believes himself to be pregnant at the end of the episode.
  • One of the Boys: Ben claims that Christine wanted to be seen as one of the boys, which unfortunately extends to the sympathy she's given.
  • One-Word Title: The name of the episode is "Hormones".
  • Pregnancy Test Plot: The episode begins when Bill decides to take a pregnancy test. Chaos ensues when Ben finds it and believes himself to be pregnant.
  • Vile Vulture: David's preferred pet is a vulture, called Babs, who he intends to feed dead bodies to and to swoop down and peck their entrails.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Jenny apparently puked in the sink, although the audience doesn't even find out that she did it until she admits it near the end of the episode.
  • Wheelchair Antics: Ben resolves his rivalry with the owner of the other car through racing wheelchairs. Ben, having much less experience using a wheelchair than his rival, isn't capable of keeping fully straight and ends up losing.
