Recap / Tracker S1E5 "The Plague"

Go To

Jess hurts her arm, so Cole drives her to the hospital. While there, he sees a woman being taken to quarantine from some kind of infection. He scans her and realizes that she is dying from an alien virus spread by a Nodulian terrorist named Tevv. Cole explains that Tevv has to pass on the virus to a female through sex every day in order to avoid dying from the disease himself. He scans a washcloth and gets an image of Tevv's human face and has Nestov taste the washcloth, determining that Tevv visited a club. Mel finds a hand stamp on Tevv's latest victim's hand, leading them to Club Crucible. They learn from the bartender that Tevv has just left with a girl and they arrive to her apartment already after their intercourse. Distraught over yet another girl ending up in the hospital, Mel volunteers to be the bait for Tevv, even though Cole is against it. Cole calls Nestov and sends him into the club to keep an eye on Mel. Mel meets up with Tevv, and they leave the club. However, instead of going to Mel's car, where Cole is waiting, Tevv takes a cab to a motel. Cole suspects something's wrong and enters the club, not finding Mel. Mel dials his phone from her purse and surreptitiously lets him know where they are. Mel stalls for time, but Tevv, running out of time, tries to force himself on her. Fortunately, Cole finds them just in time and fights Tevv. They manage to get a sample of Tevv's blood before Cole takes his life force. Cole engineers a cure from the blood and injects the women at the hospital with it.

  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Sort of. Nestov doesn't actually eat the towel. He just puts it into his mouth to taste it, since Desserians have a very well developed sense of taste. Mel is grossed out. Nestov gets tastes of a cheap aftershave, alcohol, cigarette smoke, and lots of perfume, concluding that Tevv was at a club.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Cole is shocked the humans only get care in hospitals if they have money or are practically dying.
  • Enhance Button: Cole uses his computer to blow up and enhance a grainy image from a newspaper to get a detailed picture of a club stamp on a girl's hand. Given that Cole's computer is a custom job using alien knowledge, it's possible
  • Godzilla Threshold: Witnessing Tevv's victim collapse and taken to the hospital leads Mel to volunteer to be the bait for Tevv, so that no one else gets hurt, over Cole's objections.
  • Honey Trap: Mel dresses up and chats up Tevv at the club in order to lure him to a secluded place where Cole can get the drop on him.
  • Impersonating an Officer: In order to get information from the friends of Tevv's latest victim, Cole puts on a plastic badge he got out of Mel's broken caricature and fakes a Chicago accent. Fortunately, no one questions his identity.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Cole doesn't understand why Mel is offended over him saying that human physiology is primitive. As far as he's concerned, it's an observable fact.
  • Insurance Fraud: Mel uses her policy to cover Jess, since Jess doesn't have her own coverage, by claiming to be half-sisters.
  • Jack of All Trades: Cole explains that prior to becoming a Tracker, he used to be a scholar in multiple fields.
  • Magical Database: Cole is able to search for a club hand stamp and gets a result in seconds. It's not clear why his computer has such a database or when he had time to compile it.
  • Poisonous Person: Tevv infected himself with a deadly disease in order to assassinate a Cirronian diplomat. After escaping to Earth, he needs to "bleed off" the disease each night in order to avoid dying. For that, he needs to sleep with a woman, who will become infected and die within days.
  • The Pornomancer: Tevv picks up a different girl every night. However, he doesn't have much of a choice if he wants to live after deliberately infecting himself with a Nodulian plague in order to assassinate a Cirronian ambassador. Sex bleeds off some of the disease into his partner, staving off his death but causing the unfortunate girl to die within days. It's a little strange how he's survived this long, given that his pickup lines are just awful.
