Poor Edward isn’t in the best of condition, and fears the Fat Controller will send him to the scrap heap. As a gesture of kindness, Thomas says he will do Edward’s work for him. Later though, both engines find out that Edward’s situation isn’t as dark as it would seem…

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • An Aesop: It's important to tell someone if you're not feeling well.
  • Heroic BSoD: Edward as his condition worsens.
Edward: I'm not really useful anymore...
  • Honesty Aesop: When Edward starts to break down, he asks Thomas to keep his illness a secret in fear Sir Topham Hatt will scrap him. Thomas keeps the promise in addition to pulling Edward's freight train for him; once he gets to Sir Topham Hatt and lies about Edward's condition, he is not fooled and gives him another job, and Gordon hears everything and tells it to Edward. In the end, Edward apologizes for everything going wrong, Sir Topham Hatt reminding him he should always tell him if something is wrong with him, and allows Edward to have a rest and be repaired.
  • Nice Guy: Thomas, who does Edward's workload (and risks getting in trouble with the Fat Controller) so as to ensure his safety.
  • Pet the Dog: Gordon, despite rarely having a nice thing to say about Edward, checks up on him after overhearing Thomas' story.
