Emily is asked to help a new engine named Whiff, but discovers he is scruffy and smelly and both engines are to collect rubbish trucks. Emily grudgingly sets off with Whiff, but is ridiculed by Gordon, Henry and James along the way. Because of this, she decides to run away from Whiff, but everywhere she goes, Whiff always finds her. She manages to lose him when she sees an impatient Spencer in front of some rubbish trucks. Emily asks the other engines to help move them, but they refuse, and Emily realizes Whiff is the only one who will. After finding him among some trucks, the two pull the trucks out of Spencer's way so he can finally get through. Now Emily and Whiff are good friends.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • The Cat Came Back: Played with. Emily tries to get away from Whiff, but Whiff always finds her.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Emily being embarrassed by the other engines for being around Whiff seems to be similar to a kid getting teased by the other kids for being with their opposite-gender friend who has a crush on them.
  • Easily Forgiven: Whiff doesn't show any hard feelings towards Emily for avoiding him.
  • The Freelance Shame Squad: Gordon and James laugh at Emily being around Whiff. Then Molly, Neville, and Murdoch do the same to her.
  • Green Is Gross: Whiff sports a dark green paint job, and is smelly because his job is to collect garbage.
  • Jerkass Ball: Molly, Neville, and Murdoch, who are all usually friendly engines, teased Emily for being around Whiff. This is a special case for both Molly and Neville: Molly in particular was actually teased by Emily herself, so this could be seen as revenge for what happened in "Molly's Special Special", and Neville had been bullied himself in "Thomas and the New Engine".
  • Jerkasses: Gordon and James not only tease Emily for being with Whiff, but they also didn't lend a buffer to help her push the garbage trucks. Downplayed with Henry, as he only made a comment towards Whiff and left Emily alone.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Spencer, of all engines, is this. While he was very impatient in wanting Emily to move the rubbish trucks, he was quite impressed with Whiff proving his worth in helping Emily pulling them away.
  • Luminescent Blush: Emily's cheeks glow bright red after being teased by Gordon and James.
  • Meaningful Name: When Whiff first meets Emily, he tells her that he got his name for being smelly.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Emily realizes that she shouldn't have avoided Whiff after realizing the trucks are in front of Spencer.
  • The Pig-Pen: Whiff much to Emily's dismay.
