The First Polaroid
It's been five months since Hannah Baker's tapes were released. Clay has seemingly been able to at least try to move on with his life and hasn't thought about Hannah since. Clay has been busy spending time with his new girlfriend, Skye. She takes him to get a semi-colon tattoo in memory of Hannah. During the process, Clay passes out and ends up with a comma tattooed instead.
Tyler narrates the episode from the stand of the trial against Liberty High School. Hannah's mother, Olivia declined to sign an NDA needed in order to settle the case and wants the school to be held accountable for not helping her daughter. Tyler explains that what we heard on the tapes wasn't the entire truth. He goes on to say that the tapes aren't lies, but there's a lot more truths that need to be added to them to complete the story. He reveals that when he was spying on her through her bedroom window, he could see that Hannah was already sexting somebody. Tyler says that he was angry as she was doing this after the upskirt photo Justin had passed around the school and she had been teased about it.
Jessica and Alex have rekindled their friendship and have been spending more time with each other. They decide to return to school on the same day so they can be each other's support system. Jessica is still shaken after her assault though she seems to be getting therapy after revealing to her father about her rape. The girl from the 9th tape is not revealed to be Jessica during the trial. Alex is recovering from his suicide attempt and struggling to walk without a cane to assist him. He's bleached his hair blonde and seems to be suffering from memory loss. He allegedly can't remember anything from a month before his suicide attempt; including Hannah's tapes. Zach appears to be supporting them also but he doesn't stop hanging out with Hannah and Jessica's rapist, Bryce. He seems to be trying to make everything go back to 'normal' though it's obvious this will never happen.
Jessica returns to school in good spirits, re-joining the cheerleading team now run by Bryce's girlfriend, Chloe. Jessica manages to smile despite Bryce lying that he and Jessica had consensual sex. He claims that Jessica claimed rape because she was embarrassed she had cheated on her ex-boyfriend, Justin.
School councellor, Mr. Porter threatens Bryce in the boy's toilets, pinning him to the wall. He reveals that he knows exactly who and what Bryce is and that he should watch his back from now on. Bryce appears completely unfazed by the threat and the upcoming trial.
Later on, Tyler receives an anonymous message scrawled across his photographs in the lab. He confronts Bryce to ask him if he left them. Bryce denies all knowledge, leaving Tyler to wonder who doesn't want him at Hannah's trial. Meanwhile, Jessica discovers a terrifying blow up doll with a noose around its neck. Someone has scribbled 'slut' across its stomach. Clay also receives a note, though not threatening like the other two. It's a photo of a boy and a girl. On the back is written: "Hannah was not the only one."
Olivia Baker is shown to have made a friend in a woman named Jackie. Jackie is revealed to have also lost a daughter called Tessa to suicide.
Clay is devastated to learn he won't be on the witness stand for the defense or prosecution during Hannah's trial. Him and Skye are shown hanging out and just as they're about to have sex for the first time, Clay sees Hannah standing there. He freaks out before playing it off. He leaves and Skye wonders whether it's something to do with her. Clay sees Hannah again in his bedroom.
