Season 9, Episode 3

Justin’s death and Arat’s disappearance causes serious dissension at the camp.

  • Asshole Victim: While she did make a genuine effort to change from her old ways and be part of the new allied community, here it's revealed that during the Oceanside genocide, Arat murdered Cyndie's eleven-year-old brother with both a smile on her face and a vicious taunt: "No exceptions". With that in mind, it's easy to understand why Maggie and Daryl didn't bother to save her and since Arat was never shown to feel any regret or remorse for anything she did which includes killing Cyndie's brother, it's hard to feel bad for her when she's killed by Cyndie herself.
  • Character Death: Justin and Arat are both killed by the Oceansiders.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Rick and Michonne recovered the planks of wood that Carl left paint imprints of his hand alongside Judith on the last day of his life in Season 8’s “Honor”.
    • Daryl questions Rick on how come the Saviors get to enjoy the future they’re building as opposed to numerous fallen friends - Glenn, Abraham (Season 7’s “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be”), Sasha (Season 7’s “The First Day of the Rest of Your Life”), the Kingdom’s army (Season 8’s “Some Guy”), Oceanside’s men (as clarified in Season 8’s “Worth”).
    • Rick brings up to Daryl how he chose not to kill him for stranding Merle on the roof in Atlanta back in Season 1’s “Guts”.
    • Arat confesses that she murdered Cyndie’s brother with two words: “no exceptions”. This is what Negan said right before he swung and struck Glenn with Lucille in the Season 7 premiere.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Arat has genuinely tried to make an effort to change and be part of the new allied community, but despite her pleas, Maggie and Daryl make no effort to save her from Cyndie’s wrath after hearing of her cruelty during the Oceanside genocide.
  • Just Following Orders: Arat claims that Simon would’ve killed her too if she didn’t take part in the massacre at Oceanside. Cyndie rejects this, however, by forcing Arat to remember how she went out of her way to Kick the Dog while murdering innocent children.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Subverted. Maggie initially appears horrified that the Oceansiders have been slaughtering Saviors. But once she’s reminded of Glenn’s death, she coldly turns her back on Arat and agrees with Cyndie that they don’t have to follow Rick.
  • Point of No Return: Discussed throughout the episode as the situation escalates out of control.
    • Everyone agrees that if prominent Savior leader Arat is not found, the Saviors will erupt into rebellion.
    • Rick warns that if Carol is killed, the threshold will be crossed.
    • Cyndie opines that it was crossed when Maggie hung Gregory against Rick’s wishes, which proved that they don’t have to follow Rick’s merciful doctrine. Maggie ultimately agrees, and decides it's time to kill Negan once and for all.
  • The Reveal: During the Oceanside genocide, Arat sadistically murdered Cyndie's eleven-year-old brother.
