Return to Recap: The Smurfs (1981).
Smurfette befriends a mouse in the forest which she nurses back to health, but shortly after the mouse saves Papa Smurf's laboratory from being consumed by a fire, the mouse dies, and Smurfette is uncertain whether she wants to remain in the village, knowing that someday all her friends will die as well.
This episode provides examples of
- Death by Newbery Medal: Squeaky.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Squeaky dies as a result of saving Papa Smurf's lab from a fire, presumably from smoke inhalation.
- Incurable Cough of Death: Squeaky after he saves Papa Smurf from the fire.
- It's Always Sunny at Funerals: The weather in the Smurf Village is nice during the funeral of Smurfette's pet mouse Squeaky.
- Replacement Goldfish: Smurfette gets a new pet mouse at the end of the episode to replace Squeaky.
- Sleeping Dummy: Smurfette stuffs a bunch of pillows under the covers of her bed to disguise the fact that she has run away.
- Very Special Episode: Averted; very unusual for the time. Topics such as death are usually taboo in American cartoons, especially at that time. Usually such episodes in a show would be preceded by a brief introduction suggesting that "parents may want to watch this one with their kids". This episode was given no such special treatment and was simply included as a regular part of that season's run of episodes.
- We All Die Someday: Papa Smurf tells Smurfette this to try comforting her for the loss of her pet.
