Return to Recap: The Smurfs.

The Smurfs try to get a girlfriend for Gargamel to see if it changes him.

Tropes associated with this story include:

  • Book on the Head: Gargamel gets a spellbook on his head to learn posture, but he learns to balance it with an even worse posture, so it's changed for a broom on his back to stand straight.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When the Poet Smurf tells Gargamel to put stones in his mouth to better his diction, Gargamel asks what happens if he swallows one. The Poet Smurf assures him that there are many more.
  • Deus ex Machina: When Roxana lies unconscious due to Gargamel's love potion, a man arrives who just happens to be Roxana's childhood friend Adalbert, revives her with a kiss and they leave together.
  • Lessons in Sophistication: The Smurfs try to teach Gargamel to be more gentlemanly.
  • Love Potion: Gargamel's mother gives him one to use on Roxana.
  • No Social Skills: When the Smurfs set a first blind date with Gargamel, it does terribly bad for the girl. Gargamel behaved like a jerkass and thought of only himself.
  • Sudden Downer Ending: After many efforts from Gargamel to be a better person and to get into a relationship with Roxana, it's all rendered useless in the end because Roxana's childhood friend comes out of nowhere and they leave together. And while Gargamel may have been a villain, he did promise the Smurfs that he would stop antagonizing them if he found love, so the Smurfs' efforts to help him were wasted too.
  • Victorious Childhood Friend: Adalbert is Roxana's childhood friend, and they end together.
