Recap / The Smurfs 1981 S 1 E 30 Gargamel The Generous

Go To

The Smurfs are making a garden path for Handy Smurf, but Clumsy is not focused with his work on breaking rocks. Papa Smurf assigned Clumsy to go collect more rocks. The accident-prone Smurf enters a strange cave involving diamonds. He brings some back to the Smurfs, which breaks into dust (thanks to Hefty's strength). Knowing that dust is useless, Clumsy is told to dump them and find real rocks.

Meanwhile, Gargamel and Azrael are searching for diamonds. Clumsy unintentionally dumps the diamonds on Gargamel's head, which leads to the wizard catching him in the act. Back in the village, Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs hear Clumsy's cries for help. They run out into the forest to rescue the captured Smurf. Gargamel tries to get information from Clumsy about the diamonds. When suddenly, the Smurfs started shooting acorns at Gargamel and Azrael. Gargamel shoots the diamonds back at them, but realized that he just threw his own fortune away. After fleeing from the wizard, Gargamel decides to get the diamonds by being nice to the Smurfs.

Later, Brainy and Grouchy were sent to get more rocks. They fell into a snare trap and Gargamel comes to rescue them. He told them that he should have removed the old traps. Brainy and Grouchy run off, leading to Gargamel getting sick from being sweet to them. Smurfette and Vanity are carrying logs, but end up in a quicksand trap. Gargamel rescues them and claims that he's seen the error of his ways. He asks them if they could lead them into the village to tell Papa Smurf the good news.

Once led into the village, Smurfette and Vanity tell the others that Gargamel is on their side. Gargamel tries to tell Papa Smurf that he feels bad for chasing them into territory, but the village leader refuses to believe it. Papa Smurf then tells the other Smurfs to come back home and avoid the wizard. Alone, Gargamel decides to make them bring the diamonds to him.

Clumsy meets up with Gargamel again, who asks him if he could have some rocks in the village. The accident-prone Smurf responds by bringing back real rocks. Papa Smurf soon enters to discover that the diamonds Clumsy retrieved are valuable in the human world and tells him that Gargamel is taking advantage of his kindness. When the village leader and the other Smurfs attempt return to the village, Gargamel bribes the other Smurfs with things they need. They run off to get them, much to the disappointment of Papa Smurf. Gargamel tells them to bring the diamonds by tomorrow to get the things. When they bring the diamonds to Gargamel the next day, they get captured into an empty sack. Papa Smurf uses his magic to switch places with the diamonds. When Gargamel opens the bag, he finds the Smurfs inside and the diamonds missing. He lands into the stream and swims off to find the diamonds.

Smurfette apologizes for listening to Gargamel and falling into his temptation. Vanity adds that he did seem nice for a while. Papa Smurf claims that there are some people they can't trust, no matter what they say. The episode ends with Brainy trying to speak his words of wisdom about never taking advice from strangers, but gets tossed out of sight by the other Smurfs.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Freudian Slip: Gargamel accidentally refers to Papa Smurf as "Papa Diamonds", trying to hide what he is really after.
  • Getting the Boot: Brainy Smurf at the end of the episode.
  • Only Sane Smurf: Papa Smurf is the only one who doesn't fall into Gargamel's temptation.
  • Worthless Yellow Rocks: The diamonds turn out to be useless for crushing into gravel for the new garden path. They're too hard for most of the Smurfs to break. When Hefty manages to smash one, it disintegrates into dust, and Clumsy's disappointed in himself for not finding anything useful. When he dumps them, Gargamel approaches with the unusual attitude mentioned in the story title—because, unlike the Smurfs, he has a use for diamonds. Of all the Smurfs, only Papa recognizes what diamonds are and knows about their value in human society.
Gargamel: Well, well, Smurf! Did you spill your treasure?
Clumsy: Huh? W-w-what treasure? I was just dumpin' some old rocks.
