An Animated Adaptation of The Smurfs comic book story "Smurf Soup" (original French title La Soupe aux Schtroumpfs).

In the story, Gargamel and the Smurfs encounter Bigmouth, the hungry ogre who prowls around the forest looking for something to eat. He first visits Gargamel, who tries to satisfy the ogre with what food he has in his pantry, but Bigmouth says he's still hungry. Gargamel then proposes to make "soup a la Smurf" for Bigmouth, which makes him interested. The Smurfs who overhear this return to the Smurf Village to warn Papa Smurf about the ogre, but Papa Smurf assures them that there's nothing to worry about, since nobody can find the village unless a Smurf guides them. However, as Bigmouth and Gargamel both separate from each other, the ogre sees Smurfette flying overhead on Feathers the crane and follows her straight to the Smurf Village.

Papa Smurf realizes that the ogre is now coming and has his little Smurfs prepare for his arrival while he tells Bigmouth that they will prepare the "soup a la Smurf". While the other Smurfs try to keep Bigmouth occupied, Papa Smurf goes to work on creating a formula that will be used in the soup, all the while dealing with the ogre's impatience. Soon with the formula near completion, the Smurfs prepare the ingredients for the soup, including five healthy Smurfs which he has coated with a special formula that will protect them from the heat of the boiling water. With Bigmouth sent out into the forest to gather more wood for the fire, the five Smurfs jump out of the soup and are replaced with empty Smurf suits while Papa Smurf puts the completed formula into the soup. Bigmouth returns and ingests the entire soup in one gulp, but then he finds out that the soup has disfigured him, which Papa Smurf says is one of the side effects of eating "soup a la Smurf".

Meanwhile, Gargamel has been traveling all over the forest to find the Smurf Village and soon finds himself there with an angry Bigmouth who threatens the evil wizard to make him an antidote for the "soup a la Smurf". Gargamel says that he doesn't know what the antidote is, but after a few poundings he takes Bigmouth back to his hovel to try as many mixtures as he can to find the antidote, only for the mixtures to change Bigmouth from one form of hideous to another. Finally after several failed attempts, Papa Smurf offers Bigmouth the simple solution of giving him a sarsaparilla leaf to eat, and instantly Bigmouth is restored to normal. The Smurfs watch as Bigmouth focuses all his attention on making Gargamel his next meal!

Tropes associated with this episode include

  • Eat the Bomb: Bigmouth eats one of Jokey's surprises, thinking it was food, and it explodes harmlessly in his mouth.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Bigmouth will eat anything and everything, from pumpkins and sarsaparilla leaves to — if you make him angry enough — live human beings! When he is first introduced (using ominous footsteps as he tromps through the Smurf Forest), forest creatures are seen fleeing for their lives, implying that he has eaten bunnies, squirrels and frogs alive in the past. He is also easily swayed by who can benefit him the most.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending
  • Extreme Omnivore: Neither Gargamel nor Azrael is safe from Bigmouth's insatiable appetite.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Clumsy is obviously annoyed with Brainy's endless chatter, when he is usually the only one to listen to him.
