The book continues 2 years after the The Rise of Kyoshi and by this point, Kyoshi can at least bend all the elements, but is far from a master. Haunted both by the disappearance of Yun, and her Avatar duties mostly consisting of wheedling Earth Kingdom Politicians trying to curry her favor, Kyoshi is drawn into a Fire Nation succession crisis between the official heir Zoryu, who whilst seeming weak and vacillating is concealing a much darker side, and has to be stopped by Kyoshi sending Lao Ge to stop him from committing mass murder. Further, Yun has re-emerged and is now carving a path of bloody destruction across the nations for wronging him in various fashions, making it necessary for Kyoshi to stop him. Further still, Kuruk is attempting to contact his reincarnation, but the efforts only cause Kyoshi pain until she can truly come to terms with Kuruk and his actions.
