Recap / The Scooby Doo Show S 1 E 1 High Rise Hair Raiser

Go To

In need of money, Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby go to work on a construction crew. However, they soon find that the high rise they're building is "haunted" by the ghost of Ebenezer Crabbe, supposedly a sorcerer who returns every twenty years to his old homestead to restore his youth, and is assisted by his great-great-great-granddaughter Netty Crabbe.

This episode includes examples of the following:

  • Accidental Incantation: At one point, Shaggy and Scooby find a book of spells and read one out loud that turns them into monsters. They then read the counterspell and return to normal before they even realize that they had changed in the first place.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: One of the crooks poses as Netty Crabbe, whom the gang initially thinks is alive until Mr. Doherty tells them she died fifty years ago.
  • Disguised in Drag: The ghost of Netty Crabbe is actually a man in a woman's clothing.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Shaggy and Scooby are busy laughing about how ridiculous a spell to turn a person into a monster sounds that they don’t realize that the spell actually works and they did turn monsters. Luckily for them, they find the spell to turn them back to normal before either them realize it.
  • It Was Here, I Swear!: Shaggy at first doesn't see the "Recter! Recter!" on the building. The second time, Scooby tries to tie the Specter to the beams to be sure this trope doesn't strike twice.
  • Real After All: While the Specter was fake, the actual Ebenezer Crabbe's house had a functioning spell book.
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: It turns out the villains are using a penthouse and telescope to spy on people using their safes in nearby buildings and record their combinations, allowing them to rob said safes. Their ghost costumes are used to let them sabotage the construction site because the building there would block their view.
