PART 1

The twins wake up, Dipper intent on making progress towards the blue battery mystery. At breakfast, Stan asks what the plan is, and Dipper tells him they are going to go into town to do research. Stan compliments Mabel on her fighting abilities from the previous night, and suggests Dipper learn something similar. Dipper says he's not into it, and Stan calls him wimpy before telling him to paint the outside of the Shack.

As the twins are painting, Mabel paints a webcomic plotline on the wall, painting over it as the story goes on. Soos shows up when a werewolf woman is on the wall, and Dipper suggests leaving it up and seeing how long it takes Stan to notice, making bets on how long they think it'll take.

The twins head to the library and get every science-y book they can find to start doing research on the blue batteries, one in Dipper's bag. Well, Dipper does the research at least. Mabel looks at magazines and tries to hide them in science books. Dipper catches her and tells her to focus just as Mabel hears familiar voices from outside.

Mabel practically flies out of the library in order to catch up with Candy and Grenda. Dipper tries to get her to come back inside, but fails, and continues to do the research while the girls plan a sleepover for that night. Dipper complains when he finds out, but then the twins notice a person in a hoodie shoving books into a bag.

The twins confront Hoodie, who starts stuttering begins running around the library, the twins chasing him. He and Mabel knock over several bookshelves before he runs outside, Dipper following him. Dipper tackles Hoodie, making him drop the books he had shoved into his bag. Hoodie stands up and grabs about half of the books he dropped before running down an alley, leaving an injured Dipper and the other half of his books, including his personal journal, behind.

The twins check out the books and return to the Shack, telling Stan about their encounter with Hoodie while they tend to their injuries. Stan says that he hasn't seen Hoodie before, but upon looking at some of the books he dropped, he tells the twins that some of the things in the books are related to how Bill Cipher came into town. He tells the twins to only use the books for research, and to be careful because there is no way of knowing what kind of trouble they could have gotten into.

Mabel is confident is her fighting abilities, and pokes fun at Dipper's lack thereof, before the two go upstairs. Mabel changes into her Paths uniform and explains to Dipper a bit more of how it works- once a student reaches her level of training (brown belt), the student and their master figure out their focus-level(air, earth, fire and water) to continue training the student in a fighting style similar to their personality and strengths.

Mabel starts training while Dipper attempts to research, but Mabel's training continues to distract him. Mabel eventually leaves to jog outside, allowing Dipper to focus on the increasingly dark contents of the books. Everything from spells to sacrificial rituals are found in the books. By the time Mabel returns, Dipper has gone through everything except Hoodie's journal, his notes full of dark spells, enchantments, curses and other, even more terrifying things.

Mabel returns and Dipper tells her that Hoodie's journal mentions a lair he found in town, and it mostly full of jobs his un-named Master assigned him. Mabel mentions how Paths students aren't allowed to call their Master by name before telling Dipper that he has spent the entire afternoon researching, and that her sleepover is about to start.

Dipper attempts to survive the three teenage girls, but fails and heads to his car as Mabel catches Grenda and Candy up on her Paths training, and her parents splitting up. Candy and Grenda sympathize with her, but she turns the conversation back to the sleepover and local town gossip.

In his car, Dipper is attempting to track down the location of Hoodie's lair, to little avail. He decides to take advantage of Mabel being distracted with the sleepover by heading into town on his own to try and get a lead on the mystery. As he is leaving the Shack, he notices something red in the trees and debates investigating that instead, but focuses back on his mission of tracking down Hoodie and heads into town.

PART 2

Mabel wakes up from her sleepover and cleans herself up before going downstairs. She tells Wendy and Soos about the sleepover and Wendy leaves to do something as Mabel goes outside to check on Dipper. Once she realizes he is not there, she asks Soos to call him.

In town, Dipper wakes up from sleeping in his car and answers Mabel's call, telling her he is on a stake-out to see if Hoodie returns to the library. Mabel tells him to be careful, and that if he is not back within one hour, she will never let up that she is a better fighter than he is.

Dipper tries to rationalize that he is a good fighter, even though Mabel says otherwise. He realizes how competitive he, and Mabel, are, and resolves to keep it in check when Hoodie shows up again, entering the library. Dipper runs through several ways he could grab the guy, but realizes he is overthinking and decides to just grab him and improvise.

Hoodie leaves the library furious at the twins for checking out the books he left behind and starts walking down the street, Dipper following in his car. Hoodie stops walking by the entrance to an alley, and Dipper slams his breaks, blowing his cover. Hoodie goes down the alley and Dipper follows.

Dipper grabs a two-by-four and confronts Hoodie, but before he can attack, Hoodie telekinetically pins him to the side of a building with a metal pipe, causing Dipper to drop the two-by-four. Hoodie picks it up and attempts to hit Dipper with it, but fails. Dipper tells him to turn it off and on again, causing Hoodie to release Dipper from the wall, but hit him in the head with the pipe, knocking him out.

Mabel anxiously throws one of the batteries around, Dipper very late to return to the Shack. Mabel goes outside and remembers something her master told her- to figure out what she wants. Mabel tries to meditate to take her mind off Dipper, but struggles to keep her head clear, something that is limiting her in her training.

Soos comes over and tries to meditate, but continues to hum, distracting Mabel. Soos apologizes for being a distraction, but Mabel tells him that she wasn't doing it right anyway, as if she was, she wouldn't even notice the loudest of distractions. She tells him she is worried about Dipper before throwing the battery in the air, causing it to shock her when she catches it.

The battery becomes a walkie-talkie, allowing them to hear a stuttering Hoodie and Dipper talking to each other. Dipper asks Hoodie what he is doing in town with all the books, and Hoodie says he really doesn't know, he's just checking up on a lead. Hoodie reveals how to get into his lair- a button hidden under a fake banana peel near the junkyard- where he is holding Dipper captive before they hear Mabel and Soos through the battery Dipper has in his bag. Mabel and Soos leave to rescue Dipper, Wendy covering for them at the Shack.

In a cavern with several large drainage pipes leading to the lake, Dipper is trying to get some information out of Hoodie, to little avail. Dipper asks Hoodie what he wants, and Hoodie tells him power. Dipper questions why every evil person wants to rule the world, and Hoodie tells him that he, as a Warlock, doesn't need to rule the world when he can bully people into doing what he wants them to.

The Warlock cuts Dipper's arm to use his blood for a searching spell. The Warlock drinks a potion made from Dipper's blood and begins the spell just as Mabel and Soos arrive. They free Dipper before the Warlock realizes something was interfering with his spell.

The Warlock stops the spell and sees Soos and the twins, enchanting a knife to fly at them. They avoid the knife, but the Warlock enchants a long chain and ties Soos to a rock. Mabel starts fighting the Warlock, but is unable to get the upper hand. It gets harder when the Warlock bites his own hand and becomes able to predict her actions.

Dipper jumps in, dragging the Warlock to the ground. The Warlock tightens the chain around Soos and starts backing away. He trips over one of the drainage pipes, falling down it as the chains around Soos loosen. The twins hug each other desperately and start heading back to the Shack.

Back at the Shack, Wendy stitches up Dipper's arm and Stan berates them for being stupid, but admitting he is glad they are okay. Dipper admits that Mabel's teasing him is what made him do the stupid things he did, and Mabel offers to teach him some of her martial arts stuff, which Dipper isn't shown agreeing to, but he does agree.
