Jarod becomes a race car driver to investigate a speedway crash. Sydney's comatose brother Jacob regains consciousness.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Amazing Freaking Grace: Played on bagpipes for Jacob's funeral.
  • The Cameo: Jarod gets some advice from a more experienced driver, and later gives the same advice to another driver, who remarks that it sounds familiar. The first driver is Mario Andretti; the second is his son, Michael Andretti.
  • Crashing Dreams: Sydney's dream sequence is interrupted by the ringing of a phone that is suddenly sitting on a pedestal, in a spotlight, in the middle of the room. He wakes to find his actual phone ringing.
  • Cutting the Knot: Anna recalls a story from the brothers' childhood. Their father said that whoever cut a cord of wood first would get a fishing knife, fully expecting it to be quite a task for two small children to attempt. Whereas Jimmy tried in vain to do it the normal way, R.J. is said to have hotwired a tractor and rode up to the nearby lumber yard to buy what was needed. R.J. won the bet, apparently impressing his father with his audacity.
  • Dies Wide Open: Jacob; Sydney does the respectful closing-the-dead-man's-eyes thing.
  • Monochrome Apparition: In a dream, Sydney converses with his twin brother Jacob, who has been in a coma for decades following a car accident. Jacob appears as he did before the accident, as seen in Monochrome Past flashbacks in earlier episodes — exactly as seen in the flashbacks, meaning he's monochrome in the midst of a scene that's otherwise in full color.
  • Oh, Crap!: Miss Parker's reaction to learning that it was Sydney who tried to kill Raines.
  • Red Herring: Jarod initially suspects R.J. of causing Jimmy's accident, due to the brothers' always vying for their father's approval, how R.J. won't visit his little brother in the hospital, and R.J.'s knife being what was used to covertly damage the car. It turns out that R.J. lost his knife to Brinkman in a bet and that he was the intended target of the accident. Unbeknownst to the perpetrators, R.J. had secretly been suffering from spasms that made it impossible for him to race that day. Jimmy (the only one that knew) stepped in to cover for him and, after the accident, R.J. felt too guilty to face him.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Before dying, Jacob writes "Gene" on a piece of paper, but neither Jarod nor Sydney knows what it means.
  • Splash of Color: Sydney dreams he's having a conversation with his brother Jacob, who appears as he does in the flashbacks: that is, played by the Young Jacob actor and in black and white. Then he starts bleeding, and his blood is red.
  • Twin Telepathy: It's implied that Sydney had this with his twin brother.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: The Roemer brothers work for their father, who is said to have been quite the taskmaster even when they were children. Anna muses that her husband and brother-in-law would do anything to be their father's favorite.
  • Wham Line: Sydney's confession to Jacob:
"Since your accident, I've done things—terrible things—to protect Jarod, to protect you. I even tried to kill Dr. Raines, but the bullet hit his oxygen tank."
