Recap / The Powerpuff Girls 2016 S 03 E 21 The Gift

Go To

It's Christmas time again and the girls are all set to give the Professor a mug sporting "World's #1 Dad". But during an argument between Blossom and Buttercup and Bubbles about if Santa is real, they end up breaking it in their scuffle. Now the three have to rush to get a replacement, not helped by the fact that some of their villains keep getting in their way.

Has the following tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: At the end, it seemed like the villains were willing to ceasefire and get the girls a new mug out of kindness for the holiday. But then its revealed that they had implanted a bomb into it. Luckily Santa got to the house first and put a replacement mug under the tree. With the villains not knowing it isn't theirs until they realize Mojo forgot to make the switch. Followed shortly by the bomb blowing up in their faces.
  • Christmas Episode: 2nd one of the 2016 series and third in the franchise overall.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Princess reveals she likes being on the naughty list and getting coal because she can crush them into diamonds.
  • Continuity Snarl: Blossom not believing in Santa is odd considering, if this show does follow from the old continuity, she should know already is real since "The Fight Before Christmas" had the girls meeting him.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The cup bomb the villains were planning to use to blow up the Utoniums ends up blowing them up.
  • Hope Spot:
    • After the girls send the cup flying during their tug of war and it lands, it seems perfectly unharmed. They let out a sign of relief... and then it grows cracks and breaks.
    • They manage to find a cup in the second store but Mojo destroys it before they can buy it.
    • The girls race to get to the final store and seem like they'll make it. Only for it to slam it's gate shut and close just an inch from reaching it.
  • Real After All: The Santa Bubbles and Buttercup describe to Blossom ends up being quite real.
  • Unishment: The girls nearly end up fighting Princess in the first store they go to when they see she's breaking the "Worlds #1 Dad" mugs. But the manager stops them since he mentions she did buy the cups and is free to do what she wants with them (In this case, destroying them so her father can have the only one). Plus not wanting the ensuing fight to destroy his store. Likewise the manager of the second store scolds the girls for nearly breaking merchandise when they knock Mojo into a display.
  • Villain Team-Up: The girls' villains try to team up to take down the girls after they plow through them to get to the final store. They back off when the girls are too bummed to fight them after failing to reach the store on time, though do attempt to blow them up later.
