Recap / The Office USSWE 5 Subtle Sexuality

Go To

Kelly and Erin form a Girl Group called Subtle Sexuality, and solicit the help of Ryan, Andy and Kevin to make a video for their song "Male Prima Donna".

Tropes

  • Auto-Tune: The song uses this extensively.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Kelly and Erin.
  • Breakup Breakoutinvoked: Kelly says she'll go solo like Beyoncé if the song becomes a hit.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Attempted, at least. While preparing for the video, Kelly narrates that she is going to put out her cigarette on her shoe, to show how badass she is. Since she has no experience smoking, she ends up coughing and losing badass points. The smoking scene does not end up in the final version.
  • Shout-Out: Subtle Sexuality's outfits in the video (leotards and lightning bolt makeup around the eyes) were inspired by Lady Gaga. The song itself is very much a pastiche of early Lady Gaga, particularly "Just Dance".
  • Throw It In!:invokedErin attempts to get off a counter in a sexy manner, but ends up falling off instead. Normally this would be an outtake, but it is left in, complete with Erin's look of confusion.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Ryan decides to peace out, leaving Kelly and Erin without a protagonist. Kevin volunteers to replace him. Erin tries to discourage him by gently pointing out that it's video (i.e. a visual medium) and not radio (as in, a face made for radio). He eventually gets to assist behind the camera.
  • A Wild Rapper Appears!: Ryan, under the alias "Mr. Understood", contributes to the song in this style.
    I’m the OG prima donna
    My rhymes bite like piranha
    Hotter than a sauna
    Straight outta Lackawanna!
  • Write Who You Knowinvoked: Kelly admits that "Male Prima Donna" was inspired by someone she knows, but it's a secret she'll take to the grave. But it's quite obviously about her Relationship Revolving Door with Ryan, and Ryan even Lampshades it.
