Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: Kevin winds up adopting a dog called Ruby. When describing her habits to the office, it becomes apparent that Ruby is dead and Kevin is completely oblivious about it. Eventually it turns out that Ruby is very much alive, and just happens to be really lazy and smelly.
  • Brutal Honesty: Kevin, who doesn't understand why everyone else is agreeing with Andy about things being great for him.
Kevin: I’m sorry, are you guys nuts? He’s not doing great! He was fired! This is terrible! This is literally the worst thing that has ever happened to you, not the best!
  • The Bus Came Back: Andy bumps into David Wallace at the fundraiser, who sold off his patent for "Suck It!" to the government and is now a multi-millionaire.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Dwight attends the silent auction and thinks that it's a "Guess the Prices" game like at county fairs, and thus writes down exorbitant amounts of money for the various items. Only when his donation of over $34,000 dollars is publicly announced to the whole room does he realize his mistake.
  • Fish out of Water: Nellie is still getting accustomed to American culture, and at the funraiser, she suggests getting some fancy American food like "hamburgers and tacos". Darryl goes to get her a taco, and it's obvious she's never seen a taco before and has no idea how to eat it.
  • Irony: Angela's husband Senator Liption is holding a fundraiser... to help de-sheltered dogs. At one point, Angela, a cat lover, has to stand next to someone holding one and is barely able to contain her disgust.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Ryan openly bemoans the death of singer Smokey Robinson and starts passionately talking about how he changed the music industry. However, when he can't name more than one song of Smokey's, it becomes clear that he barely knows anything about Smokey and is just trying to sound deep about music. When Smokey's death turns out to be a hoax and he's in fact performing nearby, Ryan makes up excuses not to go.
  • OO Cis Serious Business: Andy is trying hard to act like he's over his situation. Because he's trying too hard, his friends are clued into his despair.
  • Stepford Smiler: Andy keeps up a positive attitude and constantly insists to everyone that he's doing fine despite being fired and replaced by Nellie. However, everyone can plainly see that he's having a breakdown. And when he impulsively adopts 12 elderly dogs just to show up Robert, they finally get him to admit that he's spiraling.
