Recap / The Office USS 5 E 12 The Duel

Go To

Dwight and Andy come to blows when Angela’s affair is revealed.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: David Wallace asks Michael how his branch manages to stay afloat, as it turns out that because of, or in spite of him, his branch performs the highest out of all the branches. Michael is surprised and tries pathetically to explain it, making it clear to everyone that even he is unaware.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Despite having manipulated the whole love triangle for her own selfish ends the whole time, Angela looks genuinely hurt and crushed when both Dwight and Andy return to the office and make it bluntly clear that they're both done with her without talking to, interacting with or even looking at her in any way.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Jim interrupts the duel to make sure Dwight is okay after Andy hits him with his car.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: The B-Plot of the episode is David Wallace trying to figure out how an irrational moron like Micheal is somehow getting the best sales numbers in the company. Turns out that even Micheal isn't entirely sure.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: In a rare inversion, Michael became aware of Angela's affair, but managed to keep it secret for some time before bluntly telling Andy about it.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Andy knows he'd probably lose to Dwight in a one-on-one fight, so he decides to sneak attack him with his Prius.
  • Competition Freak: In the cold open, Michael runs and tests his speed with a radar gun. Eventually the workers join in, and when Dwight gets a faster speed, Michael tries to claim it was the wind behind him, before cutting ahead of Oscar and running again, claiming the speed of a passing car as his own.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: While discussing what to do, an annoyed Michael sarcastically asks Dwight if Angela is that "crazy in bed" for all this hassle, and when Dwight confirms that she is, Michael gets distracted about the notion while Jim attempts to get him back on track.
Michael: Is she crazy in bed?
    Dwight: [boastfully] Yes.
    Jim: Stop. [suddenly distracted] What?
    Michael: [intrigued] How so, specifically?
Jim: [trying to get back on track] Okay, listen.
    Dwight: Eager.
Jim: [trying to talk over Dwight] This shouldn't happen at work.
    Dwight: And flexible.
    Michael: Really?
  • Despair Event Horizon: Dwight cannot muster up any more energy to hate Andy after learning that he had sex with Angela, despite Angela telling him she wasn't sleeping with anyone else. Andy also decides to give up the duel at that point, just too frustrated over the situation.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with all members of the love triangle saddened and alone: Andy calls off the wedding, Dwight realizes that not only was Angela cheating on Andy with him, but she was also cheating on him with Andy; Angela got what came for her when both men are unwilling to even look at her again.
  • Hope Spot: For Angela. After the duel, she anxiously waits to see which of the men chose to stay with her. She is crushed to learn that, in the end, both men reject her.
  • Internal Reveal: Andy finally learns about Dwight's affair with Angela.
  • I Reject Your Reality: In the cold open, Michael runs in front of the building near a radar gun to test his speed. When Dwight runs faster than him, Michael runs while a car passes, getting the speed of 31 mph as he finishes. Stanley points out it was obviously the car that caused it, and Oscar states 31 mph is not humanly possible, but Michael claims 31 is his number.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Angela tried to have an affair with both men and let them duel each other so she didn't have to make a choice herself. By the end, she ends up with neither.
  • Loophole Abuse: Jim tries to defuse the conflict by using his position as temporary manager to ban Andy and Dwight from fighting in the office. The two just decide to do it outside where Jim can't do anything about it.
  • Pet the Dog: Watching the duel from the conference room, everyone agrees that Andy deserves to win.
  • Silent Treatment: Neither Andy nor Dwight speak to Angela upon their return to the office. Notably, Andy cancels the wedding without even looking at her, calling the baker to cancel the wedding cake loud enough for her to hear from her desk. Dwight wordlessly and unceremoniously throws his customized bobble-head, a Valentine's gift from Angela, into the trash.
  • Wimp Fight: Andy manages to hit Dwight with his car, but he does it at a low speed so he can sneak up on him. The resulting force is rather low, and, while Dwight can't move, he isn't particularly hurt. Meanwhile, he can't hurt Andy either because Andy is in the car. So all they do is childishly insult each other.
