Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 3 E 20 Lets Make A Deal

Go To

During his roommate's absence, Oscar accidentally burns a hole right through his mattress, to Felix's passive-aggressive displeasure when he returns early. Unable to afford a replacement, Oscar schemes to get himself and Felix on his old friend Monty Hall's show, Let's Make a Deal.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Brick Joke: One of the things Felix and Oscar temporarily win on the show is a stack of canned squid. At the end, Felix stages a Let's Make a Deal event at dinner and gives Monty a can of squid.
  • Continuity Nod: When Oscar produces an army cot for Felix to sleep on, he says it was his and Blanche's wedding bed. This refers to the previous episode "This is the Army, Mrs. Madison", which details the difficulties Oscar and Blanche had trying to get married while Oscar was still in the army.
  • Game Show Appearance: The episode, helpfully titled "Let's Make a Deal", has Felix and Oscar playing on a New York-based version... dressed as a horse. Monty Hall, naturally, played himself.
  • Inevitably Broken Rule: Played with. Monty tells Oscar when he and Felix ask him to put them on the show that Let's Make a Deal has rules against anyone remotely connected to the staff being on the show. To circumvent this, Felix and Oscar disguise themselves so he cannot see their faces. Monty tells them during a commercial break that he doesn't intend to throw them off the show. However, the rule comes up again after Felix and Oscar have won $1000 for a new bed for Felix. Monty points out that they technically can't accept it.
  • Involuntary Charity Donation: Because Felix and Oscar (being too closely connected to Monty) shouldn't have been allowed on the show, Monty compensates by donating their winnings to an orphanage of their choice.
  • Noodle Incident: When Oscar asks Murray to help him throw Felix's burnt mattress into the cellar so he won't see it, Murray immediately asks if he and Felix are having another fight.
  • Shout-Out: When Monty Hall addresses Felix and Oscar in their horse costume, he calls it "Silver."
  • What You Are in the Dark: When Oscar explains the situation to Monty and asks him to have them on the show, Monty answers that unfortunately the show has rules against friends of the staff or anyone connected to them participating. Oscar asks who will know, and Monty answers that he will.
