Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 1 E 12 Scrooge Gets An Oscar

Go To

'Tis the season, and yet Oscar, stewing over his lot in life, is far from jolly. Driven to the breaking point, he refuses to play Scrooge in Felix's charity Christmas play and evicts his roommate from the apartment. However, that night a spicy dinner and a production of A Christmas Carol result in a very odd dream...

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Acid Reflux Nightmare: Due to the spicy and greasy food he ate, Oscar has a Christmas-Carol-themed dream that causes him to change his mind about stewing all Christmas and refusing to play Scrooge.
  • Book and Switch: During a rehearsal, Speed is hiding porn underneath his script and is sort of not paying attention to the rehearsal. He is suddenly asked to read for the part of Scrooge. But he thinks they want him to read the porn. He balks, saying he would be embarrassed. He's coaxed into reading and begins reciting a passage from the porn, to which a very surprised Felix says, "Charles Dickens never wrote that".
  • The Cat Came Back: Felix-as-Marley falls out the window but when Oscar-as-Scrooge turns around, he's back.
  • Motor Mouth: Speed, asked to read for the part of Scrooge, rattles off the lines at top speed. Felix tells him that that's the first time he's ever heard Scrooge performed as an auctioneer.
  • No Wrong Answers Except That One: A variation. After Oscar refuses to take part in Felix's performance of A Christmas Carol, he auditions Roy, Vinnie, and Speed to play Scrooge, believing that any one of them can replace Oscar. After all three fail (Roy by halfheartedly reading the lines while punching the air, Vinnie for playing Scrooge as Ax-Crazy, and Speed for playing Scrooge as an auctioneer,) Felix attempts to play Scrooge, delivering a Large Ham performance which isn't well received. Everyone immediately agrees that they need Oscar for the role.
  • Singing Telegram: Oscar's ex-wife sends him one, collect, telling him to pay the alimony if he doesn't want to spend Christmas in jail with other bums. This does not sweeten Oscar's mood any.
  • Yet Another Christmas Carol: After throwing everyone out, Oscar falls asleep on the couch and has a Christmas-Carol-themed dream. It shows him his friends really do care about him and he needs to quit being sour to everyone unless he wants to suffer Scrooge's Christmas Future from the play.
