Go To

Neolithic Nightmare: An amateur spelunking trip to Breathing Cave goes awry when Jimmy traps himself in an underground cavern of gigantic creatures while exploring.
The Super-Clown of Smallville
The Return of Brainiac: Dr. Heckla sends another Brainiac robot, who shrinks Superman, Lois, and Jimmy.

Neolithic Nightmare contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Beneath the Earth: While exploring, Jimmy Olsen falls into an underground pocket populated by malevolent creatures, including dragons, rocs, and giant spiders.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Jimmy tells Beanie the story, Beanie claims it must have been a dream.
  • Everything Trying to Kill You: In the space of a few hours (at most), Jimmy gets captured by four different predators trying to eat him (two of which get into a battle over it).
  • Giant Spider: Jimmy is menaced by a humongous spider, which also attacks Superman when he pulls its meal away. Superman winds it up in its own web and leaves it.
  • Toothy Bird: Played for Horror; the Roc has fangs to show how weird and fearsome it is.

The Return of Brainiac contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Ant Assault: While shrunken, Lois Lane gets carried off to an anthill by one of the insects, which now stands taller than she does. Superman punches the ant and quips that he has to spoil its picnic.
  • Eye Scream: Superman shorts out Brainiac by shooting heat vision through his eyes into his brain.
  • Incredible Shrinking Man: Brainiac shrinks Lois and Jimmy to doll size after coming upon them by accident, and does the same to Superman when he comes to the rescue. The three accidentally receive another blast of the shrinking ray and end up small enough to climb dandelions and be menaced by ants.
  • Some Kind of Force Field: Brainiac's force-field appears as a kind of bubble, but apparently it's only visible to the viewers. Superman bounces off it during his first attempt to attack the android and comments that he forgot Brainiac has one. However, it doesn't extend to his feet, allowing Superman to topple him.
