Recap / The Muppet Show S 2 E 3

Go To

Fozzie Bear is too intimidated by today's guest star, Milton Berle, to preform.

Sketches and Songs:

  • "Ugly Song", performed by Mean Mama, some Frackles, a Warthog, a Crocodile, and Miss Kitty.
  • Milton's Comedy Act.
  • Muppet Newsflash: Contested Will
  • Pigs in Space: The Headlight on a Motorcycle
  • "The Entertainer" performed Milton, Rowlf the Dog, and various other Muppets.
  • UK Spot: "The Entertainer", this time performed by Miss Piggy.
  • "Who?" performed by Zelda Rose and her singing owl.
  • "Top Banana" performed by Milton and Fozzie.

This episode provides the example of:

  • Actor Allusion:
  • Art Evolution: In this episode, Gonzo's puppet is updated to have functional eyelids.
  • Eat the Camera: The crocodile does this during the "Ugly Song."
Crocodile: [singing] I'll gobble up anyone left lying around, and that gives me my permanent smile!
  • Owls Ask "Who?": One of the sketches is Zelda Rose and her singing owl singing "Who?" from the musical Sunny. Naturally, the owl sings all the "Who"s.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: One of Fozzie's attempts to hide from Milton involves wearing a disguise, which consists of glasses and a beard. Scooter at first appears to be fooled, until he admits that it looks like Fozzie in disguise.
  • Pet Heir: Referenced in the Muppet Newsflash sketch, which is about the will of Mrs. Mary Crandall, contested between her son Charles and her cat Cutie Pie. In the end, Charles gets the entire estate — 10,000 rubber mice.
  • Shaking the Rump: Miss Piggy does this during her rowdy performance of "The Entertainer".
  • Shout-Out: Milton calls Statler and Waldorf "Starsky and Crutch" as a reference to the cop show Starsky & Hutch.
  • Threat Backfire: Milton Berle runs afoul of this trope more than once while trying to make Statler and Waldorf stop heckling him.
Milton Berle: If you don't stop, I'll have the usher throw you out!
Waldorf: He can't, he's too busy.
    Milton Berle: Doing what?
    Waldorf: Keeping people in!
  • Vaudeville: Milton reminisces of his days performing on vaudeville during the prelude to "The Entertainer". During "Top Banana", he and Fozzie perform a series of quick skits in the style of vaudeville comedians.

Waldorf: Well, I finally got my hearing aid working.
Statler: Hmmm? Speak up, my hearing aid's not working.
Waldorf: [leaning further] Huh?
