Recap / The Monkees S 2 E 1 The Monkees At The Movies

Go To

An arrogant teen idol mocks the Monkees on the set of a movie. Now playing: Beach Blanket Battle!

Everybody, do the Tropes!:

  • Accidental Dance Craze: All four guys start hopping around from the hot sand on the beach. Although there’s no music and they’re all moving in different ways, a movie producer thinks it’s a dance and hires them as extras.
  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: After the guys spend the majority of the episode getting Frankie Catalina to leave the set in order to land Davy the lead role, Davy gets cast and immediately starts acting the same as Frankie. He snaps out of it fairly quickly and quits, telling the director that becoming a movie star was spoiling his character.
  • The Primadonna: Frankie Catalina, the squeaky-clean beach movie idol.
  • Script Swap: "I'm crazy about you, baby, and I know you're nuts about me. Now say those three little words - you know the words I mean - " (Micky swaps out cue card) "- You're under arrest!"
  • Shout-Out: Mike and Peter hype up Davy as a replacement for Frankie by loudly pretending to trade all Peter’s best records for one David Jones album – the one Davy actually recorded in real life before joining The Monkees.
  • That Syncing Feeling: The record player type.
  • This Means War!: The Monkees’ response to Frankie’s insult barrage.
  • Uncanny Valley Makeup: Davy impersonates Frankie’s makeup artist and dolls him up as a werewolf.
