Plan B

While Quentin tries to find a way to cure Alice of her niffin state despite her constantly annoying him, Kady and Julia are told they need two million dollars in gold to get Julia's pregnancy exorcised. Loria marches on Fillory, and Eliot and Margo discover that for the first time in history, Fillory is broke. Put it all together, and everyone agrees to rob a bank.

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Almost Out of Oxygen: The vault is airtight, which is part of the defense against Travelers. Once they trigger the trap, they can't escape, and they suffocate within half an hour or so. The team doesn't know the code and don't have the magical skill to hack it... but Alice does. Quentin makes a deal to lend her his body for half an hour a day (precise details to be worked out later) in exchange for the spell to hack the lock.
  • Beautiful Dreamer: Fen smiles as she watches Eliot sleep.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Julia. Even though they decide to help her with the bank robbery, Margo, Eliot and Penny make it clear that they still hate her for her role in Alice's death.
  • Heist Episode: The cast plans a magical Bank Robbery since they're all in need of money for various reasons.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: The haxenpaxen Julia saved in the last episode fights and kills one of the dokkaebi sent after Julia, suffering grievous injuries in the process. Julia attempts to help it, but it silently refuses aid and perishes.
  • I Die Free: After forty years in captivity to Dana, this appears to be the haxenpaxen's rationale for refusing medical aid after its fight with the dokkaebi.
  • The Masquerade: The normal bank employees know nothing about magic, but their security company does. The vault is warded up strong enough to stop a tank, and the floor of the vault itself is one big anti-Traveler rune. It only activates if you touch the floor, but unfortunately Eliot miscalculated while building Penny's anti-gravity belt, and he ends up touching the floor briefly when packing on the gold.
  • Only in It for the Money: Sun, one half of the mudang duo regards Moon's plan to kill Julia and the child as stupid—if Julia dies, no one's going to pay them.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Julia working with Quentin, Eliot, Margo and Penny.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Moon, one of the mudangs, regards Julia's child and the exorcism to get rid of it to be so dangerous that she's willing to summon dokkaebi—invisible goblin ghost things—to kill Julia and it rather than take the risk.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Eliot's golem gets killed escaping from the bank, which leads to him violently convulsing back in Fillory.
