"Student Akechi Kengo Case Files" is the fourth case arc in "The Kindaichi Case Files R" series of The Kindaichi Case Files.
Akechi, as a Tokyo University student, was invited by his high school teacher, who requested him to meet a girl that both the teacher and Akechi knew, after the girl went to her in tears before leaving, to find out more. Akechi visited the university where the girl in question was a student and a star DJ on a campus radio program, right as a murder was about to take place.
Tropes include:
- A Day in the Limelight: Akechi is the detective in this case.
- Amateur Sleuth: Akechi, being a university student who was yet to officially join the police force at the time, served this role as he was the one solving the murder case.
- Cigarette of Anxiety: During Kenmochi and Akechi's private conversation over the murder case in question, Kenmochi was smoking a cigarette... after the ashtray between them already had dozens of cigarette butts in it.
- The Dog Bites Back: The murderer in this case arc was a girl who decided to kill the Serial Rapist to make him pay for what he had done to her. As Kenmochi quickly discovered, there were more than one suspect in this case simply because of the sheer amount of girls said Serial Rapist had targeted.
- Fratbro: A dark example, as he overlaps with Serial Rapist. The murder victim in this case was a medical university student who would put sleeping pills into a girl's drink, take embarrassing picture(s) of the unconscious girl, and then Blackmail her into forcing her to comply with his demand for sex later on.
- Internal Reveal: The readers get to see who was plotting the murder because the culprit and the accomplice discussed their plan to kill their target privately right as the story plot was progressing.
- Karma Houdini Warranty: The Serial Rapist managed to get away scot-free from any and all legal repercussions due to the photos of the girls he kept as leverage in order to prevent them from reporting him to the police, but he met his end when a girl opted to stab him dead In the Back to make sure he couldn't harm anyone ever again.
- Minor Major Character: Kindaichi and Miyuki, both as preteen kids, had only a brief appearance near the conclusion of the case arc.
- School Festival: Much of the case arc happened right as a festival event was in place at the women's university where the girl Akechi was visiting was a student.
- Serial Rapist: The murder victim was a medical university student who had put sleeping pills into a girl's drink, taken embarrassing picture(s) of the unconscious girl, and then threatened to upload said picture(s) to the internet unless the targeted girl complied with his demand for sex. According to a girl who talked to Akechi, this was also why none of the girls he targeted ever reported his crimes to the police.
- Slipping a Mickey: Part of the victim's method of getting his way with the girl he targeted involved placing sleeping pills into the girl's drink so he could take embarrassing photo(s) of the target girl and then Blackmail her for sex later.
- Tempting Fate:
- After killing the Serial Rapist, the culprit attempted to reassure herself by saying the murder was "a perfect crime". Akechi would prove otherwise soon, though.
- During Kenmochi's investigation into the murder case, he learned of Akechi's status at the time as a university student studying law. As Akechi became more involved in the murder case at hand, Kenmochi began wondering what his aspiration might be before it dawned on him, but he decided to shake off the feeling.Kenmochi: (thinking internally) Whoa, that Tokyo undergraduate is interested in this case, it seems.
