Recap / The Interns S 9 E 6

Go To

Polina wants to finally befriend the other interns, and ask Rita for help. Rita suggests her a simple plan: just bring bring the guys some booze; this works nearly every time. Since Polina has no money to buy her own booze, Rita suggests to ask Kupitman for help. Kupitman agrees to help Polina — if she would take some of his patients. But once she does her job, he reveals that she completely misunderstood him; that cognac she wants would be gifted not by him, but by the patients — this is how Kupitman himself always receives it. Unfortunately, she has only three patients left. She tries to obtain cognac from them, but fails, with the last one complaining to Kisegach about her extorting alcohol from him. However, Kisegach remembers how she had a similar problem when she just became a Chief Doctor and had to build up reputation, and reluctantly agrees to help Polina, by providing her some of her own stock. Meanwhile, Kupitman realises that all of his cognac was stolen — and Polina is the obvious first suspect. But after talking with her, he learns that it was actually Kisegach who stole it: she needed something for a delegation which would arrive tomorrow. Kupitman feels betrayed, and "compensates" from Polina's booze, taking all the good beverages, leaving only the cheap booze which he doesn't care about. All seems lost, but Rita takes pity at her, and helps her throw a party, which everyone actually likes.

Phil's patient vehemently refuses the operation out of fear that something would go wrong, because he is deadly unlucky. Phil, knowing that he can't deal with situation by himself, asks Gleb for help. His role is to "prove" to the guy that he's not as unlucky as he thinks. Of course, they rigs all "tests" in patient's favour. This ultimately leads to patient believing that he may actually defeat his "curse". Then he drops his phone, causing Phil himself to start doubting whether everything would go as fine as they claim. The patient indeed runs into problems when the operation actually starts, and Phil quickly jumps into conclusion that he just sent the guy to his doom, about which he tells to Bykov. But when Bykov checks, turns out that the operation was for different patient; Phil's patient is actually fine, despite everything seemingly going wrong right from the start. The patient now believes that it's the luckiest day of his life, not knowing that his surgeon forgot a tampon inside him.

Semyon's patient, Karina, is a very rich, and very haughty bitch, who insists on being treated with respect she "deserves" — without showing any to anyone else. They quickly becomes enemies, with patient calling her boyfriend Alyosha to "deal" with Semyon. Failing to deal with the problem by himself, Lobanov asks Bykov to help with kicking Karina out, but Bykov refuses, stating that he considers Karina to be cute, calm woman towards whom he feels nothing but sympathy. Semyon explains the situation, but Bykov still refuses, stating that when he has conflicts with the VIP patients, he solves them by himself, without involving other people. When Alyosha finally arrives, he turns out to be much more reasonable than Karina, and explains that she acts like this to everyone (he actually agrees with most of what Semyon had said about her). He suggests Lobanov to just apologise: if Semyon would tolerate her for just one more day, Alyosha would take her away to Germany, and Semyon would never see her again. He also offers him some good money, after which Lobanov agrees. Seeing how humble Lobanov has became, Bykov and Romanenko decides that something is wrong, and comes to conclusion that he was scared into compliance. They decides to "help" him by calling one of Bykov's very top-caliber friends, which saves Semyon from his patient, but also prevents him from earning easy money.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Born Unlucky: Phil's patient is very unlucky since the day he was born (May, 13th,note  on Monday). He was also born cord-wrapped (another negative superstition). He only learned to walk in three years... and once he tried, he immediately fell and broke his arm. It only became worse from here, and he had several bad omens just yesterday: when he was transported in ambulance, it went into a road accident; then he was dropped from a gurney; then his elevator "accidentally" stopped right across the morgue. He is deadly certain that operation which Phil suggests him, with 99% success rate, would go wrong for him as well. Phil suggests to talk with a psychologist about it; predictably, they fails to catch him, as he already leaved. His bad luck doesn't end here, either...
  • Dirty Coward: Invoked. When Lobanov explains why he needs Bykov's help with his patient, Bykov refuses to help, stating that when Bykov goes into conflicts with VIP patients, he deals with them on his own, without bringing other people, and so must Semyon.
  • The Dreaded: Bykov's friend Innokentiy, apparently, has a very threatening reputation, because when Bykov calls him, it scares Alyosha and his girlfriend enough for them to apologise and leave.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: When Kupitman learns that it was Kisegach who stole all of his cognac, he feels betrayed; she was literally the last person from whom he'd expected such backstabbing.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: Polina's attempts to get booze always ends with some issues.
    • She tries to borrow some from Kupitman, but he asks her to work for him in return... and only then reveals that she was supposed to receive cognac from the patients, as the "tips", like Kupitman does that himself; by that point, she has only three patients left.
    • She tries to hint her patients. First one says that he quit drinking due to cognac being the source of his troubles. Second one misses the obvious hint and thinks that she's insulting him. She asks the third one directly, but he thinks that she's extorting him, and complaints to Kisegach.
    • Kisegach sympathises with Polina, and gives her some of her own supplies. Then she needs some booze for her own needs, and borrows it from Kupitman, who gets angry and "compensates" by taking away all good stuff from what Polina has prepared, leaving her with cheap crap which not even Kupitman would drink. Fortunately, it's when Rita takes pity at her, and helps her with throwing a party.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Polina's plot of this episode is her attempting to finally end her status as an outcast, by befriending the other interns who acts very hostile to her since day one. By the end, she seemingly succeeds.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Bykov considers calling his friend Innokentiy to be "nuclear option", especially if they call him for something so "minor" as Lobanov.
  • Henpecked Husband: Karina's boyfriend Alyosha does whatever she demands, without arguing. He tolerates his girlfriend merely because he really loves her, but even he agrees that she's a bitch. Whenever she starts yet another conflict, he's the one to come and defuse the situation.
  • Hint Dropping: Polina's attempts to receive some cognac from her last three patients by "hinting" them about it completely fails. First one only states that his problems started from cognac (so whether he understood her or not, there's nothing to catch with him); and the second one misunderstands her attempts as insult: in Russian, "cognac" sounds like it's constructed from the words "kon" (horse) and "yak", so, when Polina only pronounced the first half of the word, he takes it as her calling him a horse. She doesn't bother with a third one and just asks him directly — and he complains to Kisegach, thinking that it's an extortion.
  • Meaningful Name: Polina tells Rita about a funny case from her practice, when two patients with surnames "Koshkin" (from "koshka" — cat) and "Myshkin" (from "Mysh" — mouse) were put in the same ward... where they immediately started conflicting and eventually fighting.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Phil feels extreme regret when he realises that he just sent his patient on the operation, despite his insistence (the patient is afraid that he's too unlucky to live), and that the operation now would likely end in failure, given how much troubles it has already; he doesn't bother with double-checking, which prevents him from learning that it's on another patient. Then his own patient finally arrives, and Phil presumes that he's a visitor from other side (specific wording doesn't help), and starts apologising. He only realises the truth when patient mentions lavement.
  • Oh, Crap!: Phil goes straight from optimism to near-panic when his patient gets finally snapped out of his pessimism... only to drop his phone in the middle of a phone talk with wife, leading to Phil himself starting to doubt whether he may really be cursed.
  • Rich Bitch: Lobanov's patient, Karina, is a bitchy blond girl from VIP ward with a pet chihuahua, who considers her conditions to be "humiliating" (due to the hospital serving her gruel; even her boyfriend, with whom she spoked over a phone, later mocks her for it). When Semyon arrives, she acts very rudely to him. He reacts in kind, and orders her to stop, under a threat of kicking her out. He also orders her to remove "that animal". She's not impressed and calls her boyfriend Alyosha.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Gleb plays crucial role in convincing Phil's patient to attend an operation (by rising his confidence in his luck), but otherwise lacks his own plot.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Lobanov was perfectly okay with suffering some humiliation if he would be generously paid; unfortunately, Bykov "saves" him by calling his friend who scares Karina and Alyosha away.
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Phil's patient is pathologically unlucky, and fears that Phil's attempts to assure him that there's "99% chance that everything would go okay" just asks for him to become that 1%.
