Recap / The Interns S 9 E 2

Go To

Gleb comes at work with obvious hangover and heavy smell of alcohol, and now must somehow hide it from Bykov. Lobanov suggests to use garlic. It works, but now Gleb has heavy garlic smell. More so: Bykov demands to know why Gleb consumed so much garlic, and when Gleb uses "illness" as his reason, Bykov orders to isolate him in one of the wards and assigns Lobanov to "treat" him. Kisegach soon finds Gleb there, and nearly breaks his cover story (even after she recognises a smell of garlic), after which she delivers his clinic history (filled to the brim with complete nonsense made up by Lobanov just for fun) to Rita. At least she didn't read it... yet. But Rita reads it herself, and confronts interns about it; she agrees to keep it hidden, on condition that they would do some clean up for her. However, they quickly gives up and proceeds to drink beer instead — which results in them being busted by Kisegach. She gets angry, but also agrees to cover for them... if they would stay away from any alcohol for the next month.

Phil's patient turns out to have rather impressive breasts. So impressive, in fact, that Phil only realises what he's doing in the middle of groping her. He manages to salvage the situation by lying that he's a former plastic surgeon and complimenting the good quality of her implants. But the patient decides to invite her friend so they can "consult" with Phil. Phil gets pressed into examining one of those friends and consulting her, but gets busted by Rita. Rita calls him out on this, but he points out how easy it is to arouse a man who had no sex for two months. Even after that, Phil continues his "career" of the "plastic surgeon", to Rita's irritation.

Kupitman insists that Bykov must fire Polina, under the first filmsy excuse he can find. When his initial attempts to press her fails, Bykov just gives her seemingly impossible time limit to deal with her current patient... only for her to succeed with much time left to spare. Bykov tries to just fire Polina out of the blue, but she notices a smell of alcohol and calls him out on it, which only makes Bykov look like a fool. Since Kupitman by that point stopped caring whether Polina would stay or not, Bykov just calmly accepts defeat. But Polina gets disappointed by learning that he's of "barfing, but not biting" type, and decides to quit on her own. Bykov, feeling offended by Polina's words, thinks whether he's indeed just some pathetic loser, and now desperately needs someone to yell at. That's when Rita reminds him that he has other interns (slackers Gleb and Semyon, "plastic surgeon" Phil). Polina, who returned to take her phone, witnesses it, and changes her mind. Bykov yells on her, too, but she doesn't mind anymore.

This episode provides examples of:

  • The Alcoholic: Kisegach accuses her son of becoming an alcoholic when she busts him drinking beer (he was Playing Sick to avoid doing work), and when he asks to not reveal this to Bykov, she insists on him and Lobanov (who's part of the plan) to avoid any alcohol for a following month (she would check them daily).
  • Blackmail: Rita finds out about Gleb's and Semyon's plan and uses it to blackmail them into doing work for her.
  • Blatant Lies: Supposedly "sick" Gleb gets busted drinking beer with Semyon. His defence? It's new healing method — drinking hot beer. With beer not even being hot. It doesn't work, and angry Kisegach slaps him so hard, he falls from the bed.
  • Blunt Metaphors Trauma: Phil mistakes Bykov's phrase "(to) crumple tits" as him being aware of Phil's screwup with big-breasted patient and mocking him in this way before punishing, and nearly asks him how he learned about it. Rita stops him at the last moment and then explains to Phil that this phrase means "wasting time on doing nothing", and that Bykov was just interested why Phil isn't working.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Phil's patient has very impressive breasts (due to implants she used). Phil gets "hypnotised" by them to the point he only realises what he's doing in the middle of groping her. He manages to save his grace by lying that he used to be a plastic surgeon back in the USA, in which she believes... and invites her friends, so Phil may "consult" them.
  • The Dreaded: Bykov's reputation was a reason why Polina actually decided to become his intern; she expected him to be harsh, but effective steel-willed boss who would force everyone to obey his orders. Instead, she finds barely functional department where no one likes him, but that's it; no one really fears to defy him, while Bykov himself wastes time drinking with Kupitman instead of working. She is disappointed, expecting a real challenge and not getting it, and now wants to leave. She only changes her mind when she sees Bykov yelling on the other interns for their screwups.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: When pressed by Kupitman, Bykov decides to fire Polina under first excuse he can find... only to fail to find any.
    • Polina is late at work on a first working day? Nah, she arrived earlier than anyone else, already chose the patient and started working.
    • Bykov tries to press Polina about her starting working on her own initiative, without his order, which she counters by pointing out that Bykov himself was late for fifteen minutes, and she simply grew tired of waiting him. He then tries to press her on considering herself the smartest one for choosing the "most interesting case", only to read a clinical history and reluctantly agree. He then simply imposes a time limit on her, which was deliberately set to be impossibly short (only two hours). He also additionally forbids her from using computer when she asks, stating her terrible handwriting, simply to add insult into injury. Result? She succeeds after only a half of this time, wasting another half an hour on simply trying to find Bykov. This one actually impresses Kupitman enough for him to forgive Polina, simply for her finally kicking Bykov's ass. This, however, causes Bykov to hate her enough to continue attempts to fire her.
    • When Bykov tries to just kick Polina out, just because, she immediately notices alcohol smell and calls him out on it, making it look like she is more professional than him. Realisation of this hits Bykov so hard, he fails to even insult her and can only grin angrily. After Kupitman tells him that he no longer cares what Bykov would do to Polina, he accepts defeat and lets her continue working.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Phil lies to his patient after he accidentally groped her (really, it was that hard to resist) that he is a (former) plastic surgeon. Not only she falls for it, she calls her friends for "consultation" (which he can't refuse to provide without revealing the truth) — and he gets busted by Rita.
  • Impossible Task: Polina receives only two hours for a case presumably too hard for ordinary intern. She succeeds after just one hour, and spends another half an hour on searching for Bykov to report.
  • It's Personal: Why Bykov decides to continue trying to fire Polina even after Kupitman agreed to leave her alone — because she just humiliated him before Kupitman with her success (which actually impressed Kupitman enough for him to forgive her for her mistake on the previous day), and now he must fire her, in order to preserve his face.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After all his attempts to fire Polina fails (and Kupitman no longer cares about her anyway), Bykov calmly accepts defeat and lets her stay.
  • Playing Sick: Gleb masks his obvious hangover by pretending to be sick, and smell of alcohol with garlic (commonly used as a folk treatment method). Bykov falls for it and assigns Lobanov to act as Gleb's doctor. Unfortunately, Kisegach soon arrives and gives Gleb's clinical history to Rita, who promptly uses it to blackmail them (as it contains only gibberish). They starts doing work for her, only to drop it in the middle and go to drink beer, during which they gets busted by Kisegach; they're not as successful in their lies this time.
  • Shout-Out: When Bykov notices Phil, Gleb and Semyon when he desperately searches for an excuse to yell on somebody, the camera switches to his PoV, showing interns in heat vision, Predator-style.
  • Tempting Fate: Interns accuses Rita of ratting them out to Bykov; she disagrees and insists that Bykov shouted on them for entirely unrelated reasons. When they still don't believe her, she calls Bykov and tells him about their screwups, which leads to new wave of yelling.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When discussing his impulsive groping of his patient, Phil promises Rita that this was "the first and the last time" and that "he would get a hold on himself", she points out how weird it sounds in context of the situation.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • When Bykov tries to kick Polina out just because, Polina notices alcohol smell and calls him out on it, stating that he damages the reputation of all doctors by his behaviour. He gets so shocked, he fails to reply in any way.
    • Rita calls Phil out on him groping women under pretence of being a "plastic surgeon". He replies by stating that he had no sex for two months straight, and this was by accident anyway.
